Miniature dolls can represent nearly any character you like and there are hundreds available commercially. If you have a grand Georgian house and want a well dressed lady, or if you want a fat old man to look after your bakery you will have plenty of choice.

As a rule whatever method you choose if you have a twelfth scale doll house your doll should be 5 – 6 inches tall. When choosing your doll you have several options, you could purchase a basic shop dolls house doll, find a hand made doll, have a doll specially made for you or make a doll yourself. Out of all these options purchasing a basic doll from a shop is the easiest.

Commercially made doll house dolls come in either fixed poses or varying degrees of flexibility.Resin dolls are rigid casts. Although the top of the range in this style can have some exquisite detail, you are limited with what you can do with them. The more flexible commercially made dolls can be posed, which does give them an advantage. If you do decide to purchase a commercially available doll, don't think that you are restricted by it's style - you can always personalize them by adding accessories to what they are wearing, or adapting their clothing. There are always accessories and fabrics available to easily change them.

Handmade dolls offer far more choice, and in most cases an artisan will be happy to make a doll to your own specifications, so you can get exactly what you want. These are obviously more expensive, but well worth it if you want something unique.

A great place to actually look for handmade dolls that have been made by artisans is here, on eBay. Many dolls house makers put their work on eBay and I have seen some really wonderful hand made dolls. If you want a hand made dolls this is a great place to start looking.

Another good source of handmade dolls would be doll house and miniature fairs, which are advertised in all the Dolls House Magazines Fairs are also a good place to exchange hints and tips with other miniaturists, and have a good day out.

The next option would be to make one yourself. The parts needed to make miniature dolls are easily available, and you can have great fun dressing your doll to suit it's new setting. If you are feeling really adventurous, don't get a pre-moulded head, try sculpting your own with fimo, or other craft materials. That way you will know that you have a unique creation for your miniature world.

Whatever doll you choose - enjoy your hobby
