Looking for woodworm in furniture

Buying furniture off eBay is a great way to get a bargain. Personally I prefer to have real wood built to last but you need to check it for faults just like anything else. If it has woodworm you could be bringing a problem into your home. Hopefully this will help you identify and prevent this.

What is woodworm?

Woodworm refers to the larvae of any wood-boring beetle, rather than one particular species. In the UK, the most common are the Common Furniture Beetle, Deathwatch Beetle and House Longhorn Beetle. All invade and consume wood, and then leave when they have reached maturity.

How to spot wood worm in furniture

It's a common misconception that woodworm only affects old houses and furniture, woodworm can be present in any piece of wooden furniture and you should always check!

Signs of woodworm include:
  • Small round holes in the woodwork, similar to the holes in a dart board.
  • Fine, powdery dust around these holes (this is known as frass).
  • Crumbly edges

Even if you can't see any holes, you might also find frass escaping from the back or underside of the furniture - this suggests active woodworm. Check with the seller if they are aware of this as not all of these signs of activity are cause for concern, holes and frass can be an indication a previous woodworm infestation and the furniture may have already been treated.

Common furniture beetle will more than likely be the type infesting furniture and can be easily treated with a spray or gel yourself like the one shown below. Many can be found on eBay: Woodworm Treatment

For Deathwatch (attacks large hardwood timbers, such as Elm and Oak) or Lornhorn (principally found in roof timbers) you would need to contact a professional company to treat the effected wood.
