LION ANNUAL. Amalgamated Press/Fleetway. 1954-1983
The first few annuals from 1954-1960 are pretty common. 1961-1964 seem to be scarcer. 1961 is when laminated covers came in.

A little more difficult to find though not so scarce as the War Adventures. Note that there's also the Lion Book of How It Works (1968), Great Conquerors (1970) and Motor Racing (1970) though these are readily available on auction sites and catalogues.

The Summer Spectacular (title below) preceded this run of Summer Specials. A 1968 in Fine sold on E Bay for £17 (Nov 2007) so I could be well under in my estimates. Watch this space!

LOIS LANE DOUBLE DOUBLE COMICS. Thorpe & Porter. 1 1967
These were bound-together remaindered copies of selected DC and Marvel comics with covers taken from original DC comics or sometimes new covers adapted from interior scenes. Very hard to find in Near Mint but often show up on E Bay in low and mid grade. Good reading value. #1 of this title seems to be scarce for some reason. To my knowledge there are 24 different Double Double Comics across a number of titles - Action, Adventure, Batman, Detective, Jimmy Olsen, Justice League, Lois Lane, Strange Adventures, Superboy, Superman and World's Finest. But I'm still looking!

Highly collectible series of annuals. All that 'Hi-Yo Silver, Away' stuff. And Tonto the faithful sidekick muttering "Kemo Sabe" all the time. Clayton Moore who played the Lone Ranger on TV died in 1999 aged 85. The very last annual in 1975 was published by Brown Watson.

LOOK AND LEARN. Fleetway/IPC. 1 20th Jan 1962-1049 17th Apr 1982
The great educational paper for boys and girls of the 60s. What has recently been appreciated is the amazing artwork, most in colour. The rights to the entire output has been bought recently and you can subscribe to re-issued collectors editions. #232 saw The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire but there was also Asterix (in a different guise), Jason January, Rob Riley and did I mention The Trigan Empire? Issues before #232 turn up in abundance on E Bay and are generally inexpensive. #232-382, #391-752 are Don Lawrence art. The best! Annuals ran from 1962 to 1986.

LOOK AND LEARN BOOK FOR BOYS. Amalgamated Press/Fleetway. 1962-1986
The first couple of annuals are hard to find in anything approaching decent shape. The later annuals are all very common and of no real value beyond a couple of quid. There was also a 1962 Look and Learn Book for Girls at roughly the same value as the Boys Book. Also came with a dust-jacket.

Fantastic nostalgia for 40 somethings. All that telly and rock and pop stuff of the early Seventies. Aaaaaahh....it just takes you all back. These magazines do turn up on E Bay and while not strictly comics they are worth including here for their cult appeal and collectibility. Pretty sure there was a Summer Extra magazine in 1974 as well.

MAGIC COMIC, THE. D.C. Thomson. 1 22nd Jul 1939-80 25th Jan 1941

The third comic to come out of the D.C. Thomson stable after Dandy and Beano but it fell victim to war-time paper shortages after only 80 issues in 1941 and perhaps none of the characters really making it into the big time. A copy sold at auction in March 2005 for £1,925. There can't be more than 5 or 6 number one issues of this title in existence. I think it's 6 at the moment.
