VICTOR, THE. D.C. Thomson. 1 25th Feb 1961- 1657 21st Nov 1992
A popular title with great nostalgic appeal and with some great strips like Tough of the Track and Morgyn the Mighty. #1 is genuinely scarce in any grade and the last couple of years' worth also hard to come by. The free gift Super Squirt Ring was taped to a random page inside the comic so there are often tears when the free gift has been removed. A recent E Bay sale (Nov 2007) of an apparently excellent copy with no free gift was £77.

VIZ. Viz Comics/John Brown. 1 Dec 1979-present

A success story in publishing beyond all other. Who'd have thought that a home-made comic produced in a back bedroom by a couple of guys would enter the national consciousness? Very funny, very clever and catches the absolute flavour of its northern roots. Early Viz issues appear on E Bay quite regularly and command vast sums which people seem prepared to pay. For issue #1, it's important to have the free gift, stapled in Free Ice Cream! A "perfect copy" sold for £1,220 Dec 2007 on E Bay.

VULCAN. IPC. 27th Sep 1975-3rd Apr 1976 (28 un-numbered issues, joins Valiant)
A title with great appeal as it reprints the cream of British comic strips from The Trigan Empire to Robot Archie, The Spider to The Steel Claw. The black and white strips have been re-coloured for the most part and look at bit garish but there's some great art and stories. Sadly short-lived. Even though it is quite common on E-Bay it is hard to find in high grade as the flimsy paper shows every mark and tiny crease. Interestingly the title was first launched in Scotland from 1st March 1975 for 30 issues until Sep 1975 before the national edition was published. There was one holiday special in 1976 and one (softcover) annual in 1977. The free gift with issue #1 (Super Potato pop gun) is fairly common and adds a few pounds to the value. Better if it's still attached to its plastic sprue in original packet.

VULCAN ANNUAL. Fleetway. 1977
Notoriously difficult to find in high grade owing to its soft (thin) cardboard covers which are predominantly white which shows the slightest dirt and wear. Nice Don Lawrence cover art and Don Lawrence Trigan Empire inside. The only annual for this title. Nov 2007 E Bay sales: £10.51 (VG+), £30 (VF)

Rival title to Battle Picture Weekly which came out six months later. Free gift of 8 Golden Replica Medals (to be stuck onto a card chart with more medals in the next issues) adds maybe £10 to the value. Annuals ran from 1977 to 1991.
