DANDY COMIC, THE. D.C. Thomson. 1  4th Dec 1937-present
The longest-running British comic title approaching its 70th anniversary. Not quite as culty and popular as The Beano though. About 15 copies known to exist of issue #1 (compared to 16 or 17 recorded Beano #1's). There is also a copy with two centre-spreads missing so it's basically the first four pages and the last four. It still sold for £148! An issue in solid VG Plus was sold at auction in June 1996 for £2,420 which helped put this item on the map. It was descibed as having "tanned dusty front/back covers with three small tears. Interior pages lightly tanned with edge wear". June 1999 saw £4,840 achieved. In 2004 a world record price was established for a British comic at a staggering £20,350 for a Fine Minus grade copy with the only known surviving free gift Express Whistler. A VG+ copy was sold at auction in May 2005 for £6,366. The Dandy title currently holds the record highest sale for both comic and annual, putting The Beano firmly in its place for once! Dandy is now Dandy Extreme and monthly. The desperation of the free gifts that are piled into the pre-bagged package makes you fear for this title's long term survival.

DANDY BOOK, THE. D.C. Thomson. Sep 1938-present
One half of 'The Big Two' with The Beano Book. Dandy Books still sell well though are traditionally below Beano values. The first one was titled The Dandy Monster Comic and the cover shows Korky the Cat in the foreground pointing to other characters each named, Jimmy/Grockle in right bottom corner. This does occasionally show up on E Bay and at auction in lower grades but rare in anything beyond Fine. The highest graded known copy in Very Fine Plus was sold at auction in September 2006 for £6,232. And low grade are popular too. A Poor copy with no spine and deteached front board sold for £418 in Sep 2006 by Comic Book Postal Auctions.

DANDY-BEANO SUMMER SPECIAL. D.C. Thomson. 1963
Fast becoming one of the Holy Grails of British comics, this was the first ever Summer Special which led to a tradition of Dandy and Beano Summer Specials from 1964 and then a whole host of other titles thereafter. It's not quite as scarce as I once thought it was. Copies do show up on E-Bay from time to time, about 2 or 3 a year at the moment. Anything above a Fine copy and you've got yourself a goldmine. But true Fine mind you. Get practising on that grading! The last significant sale was £523 for a VG copy in Oct 2007. I have only ever seen one true Near Mint copy and my guide price is conservative. Frankly if someone wanted to pay £2,000 for Near Mint it's still probably a bargain! What's that phrase again? "A comic is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it". Repeat after me....

DANDY SUMMER SPECIAL. D.C. Thomson. 1964-present
Like the Beano Summer Specials, these have become part of British comics' history with brilliant covers evoking memories of buckets and spades by the sea. Large tabloid size comics which are difficult to store so corners get turned and edges get creased and crumpled.

DETECTIVE DOUBLE DOUBLE COMICS. Thorpe & Porter. 1-3 1967-1968
These were bound-together remaindered copies of of selected DC and Marvel comics with covers taken from original DC comics or sometimes new covers adpated from interior scenes. Very hard to find in Near Mint but often show up on E Bay in low and mid grade. Good reading value. To my knowledge there are 24 different Double Double Comics across a number of titles - Action, Adventure, Batman, Detective, Jimmy Olsen, Justice League, Lois Lane, Strange Adventures, Superboy, Superman and World's Finest. But I'm still looking!
