Reebok Freestyle high-tops

If you’re over a certain age, you’ll remember Reebok Freestyle high-tops from the first time around. These classic shoes – which recently celebrated their 30th birthday – were the quintessential Eighties trainer, best worn in pastel shades with a pair of leggings or even – oh, the shame of it! – ski pants. But whereas back then you were limited to a few basic colours, they now come in all sorts of wild shades and designs. This includes a fabulous limited-edition Basquiat range, which features patterns and visuals taken from the late artist’s work.

'80s style

Similarly eye-catching are the Eighties-style Reebok colourways – take your pick from black and gold, or vivid purple and neon pink. And if you like your trainers to give you a bit of height, you can try the Freestyle wedges, which comes in hip shades of black and fuchsia, or muted shades of olive and plum. Meanwhile, if you want to be bang on-trend, you can go for something simple. Fashion editors are currently opting for minimal trainers, like Adidas’s Stan Smiths. You can tap into this look by opting for a plain black or white pair of Freestyles.

Leopard-print Reebooks

These leopard-print trainers would look amazing with a pair of shorts or tight-fitting black jeans. They’re very similar to a pair of Stella McCartney for Adidas numbers, but are around half the price. Indeed, one of the best things about the Reebok Freestyle range is that it’s affordable, as well as cool.

Reebok pumps

And it’s worth remembering that the Reebok Freestyle isn’t just a fashion shoe – it’s also a high-performance trainer. Reebok pumps are great for indoor workouts, especially dance classes, while the all-white versions are just made for tennis. The leather on these shoes is super-soft, making them comfortable, while the cushioning on the sole keeps you light on your feet.

Vintage tees

The Freestyle was one of the first trainers to be designed specifically for women. Back then everybody was into aerobics, and the shoe, with its comfy fit and ankle support, was ideal for the Jane Fonda-style classes of the day. It also caught on with dance troupes and cheerleading teams – in the 80s Reebok supplied the Los Angeles Laker Girls with their shoes.

The Reebok Freestyle range is mainly about the shoes, but you’ll sometimes come across pieces of clothing too. A retro-style tennis tee, for instance, would be great on the court, or as loungewear, teamed with a pair of joggers and white Freestyle trainers. And at only £4.99, it’s a total bargain.

But really the Freestyle range is all about the trainer. Back in the day, these shoes were so popular Cybill Shepherd wore a pair of orange ones to the Emmys. Who needs Jimmy Choo when you’ve got a pair of Freestylers?
