It’s time to bid goodbye to those bikinis, kaftans and flip-flops because winter has arrived. That means it’s also time to dig out those thick jackets, soft leather boots and warm black tights again − and add some exciting new pieces to our wardrobes.

Although it may have been unseasonably warm recently, it’s never too early to snap up the best fashion winter has to offer. From sportswear to statement earrings and sequins, these are the trends that are set to be massive for AW16...

1. Velvet

Luxe and ever so chic, velvet was one of the biggest trends on the AW16 catwalks − with everyone from Preen to Valentino sending their models down the runway dressed in the sumptuous material.

Velvet looks best when it’s worn close to the body, so accentuate your gorgeous curves with a fitted velvet dress in deep autumnal colours such as olive green or dark plum. If you’d prefer a less structured style, opt for a velvet dress with an A-line cut − but keep it fun and young by playing with the neckline and opt for an off-the-shoulder style or a flirty V-neck.

If you’re not sure about velvet, ease yourself into the trend gently by throwing on a simple velvet blazer for instant style points.

2. Sportswear

We don’t think we could love a trend more! Comfortable, cool and effortless, sportswear ticks all the boxes.

Most often sported by fashion wunderkinds Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner − and shown on the catwalks by the most elite of designers (including Balenciaga) − the trend is showing no sign of disappearing any time soon.

Opt for fitted rather than baggy jumpers to avoid looking swamped, and add a touch of colour with a pair of snazzy trainers. Don’t feel like you always need to look like you’re about to head to the gym, either. This look works just as well with a few key pieces − such as a sweatshirt or a sporty jacket − mixed in with your usual winter wardrobe. Throw on with a pencil skirt or some tailored trousers and you’re good to go.

3. Animal Print

With designers including Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana adopting the timeless trend for AW16, it’s clear to see that animal print is as popular as ever.

The good news is there’s no set way to wear it. Step out in a giant leopard print coat à la Kate Moss, be brave and clash different prints like Olivia Palermo, or opt for smart separates like Victoria Beckham who’s partial to a leopard print pencil skirt and handbag.

If you’re not sure how to work the trend into your wardrobe, start small with a cute collar or a subtle belt. If you really want to work those curves, there’s nothing like an animal print dress and heels to give you the wow factor.

4. The Military Boot

For serious fashion points, don’t be afraid to add the military boot to your wardrobe − it’s surprisingly wearable.

Team them with a girly, floaty dress for a contrasting look, or wear with jeans and a floaty top to make a chic − and comfortable! − style statement.

After all, if the models at Louis Vuitton, Carven and Chloe are anything to go by, they’re going to be a staple part of all the cool kids’ wardrobes this season.

5. Sequins

It’s official: Sequins are one of this season’s biggest obsessions. Spotted at Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger and Alexander McQueen, three is definitely a trend.

While models were sent down the catwalks in top-to-toe shimmer, that’s certainly not the only way to wear the trend.

Add some glitz to a boring black outfit by adding a sequined top, or buy a sequined collar to jazz up a favourite jumpsuit. If you feel like really making a fashion statement, then hunt down some structured sequinned trousers for a festive look that will show off your curves for all the right reasons.

6. Earrings

They were long, they were bold and they were attention-grabbing: The statement earrings on the AW16 catwalks were nothing like the studs your gran once gave you for Christmas.

This season, earrings are all about making a statement, as seen in the eye-catching creations by designers including Marni and Stella McCartney.

Pair chandelier earrings with an off-the-shoulder top for added drama, or wear a bright pair with an all-black ensemble for extra oomph.

7. Trench Coats

From Celine to Burberry, good old trench coats were all over the AW ’16 runways in different shapes, colours, materials and sizes.

They never go out of style, so invest in the right one now and you’ll be set for rainy days for years to come.

Choose a streamlined, fitted trench with unfussy pockets and big lapels to highlight all the right areas without swamping you. Don’t forget to use your belt – they’re useful not just for wrapping up against the cold, but also for showcasing your hourglass figure and drawing attention to your waist.
