The Bridget Jones Fashion Fails We Can All Relate To

We are so, so grateful that Bridget Jones is back – not just because the films make us laugh, but because she’s a reminder that you can be a bit wobbly, clumsy and silly but still have loads of fun. Of course, we all knew this already, but it’s not very often Hollywood acknowledges that curvy girls have interesting lives, too.

One of our favourite things about Bridget – and the thing that has us cringing with recognition every time – is the fact that her life is basically one long fashion faux pas. We’ve all worn an inappropriate outfit to work or been caught out in seriously unsexy underwear, but Bridget manages to take this to extremes…

However, if you’re one of the five people in the world who haven’t seen the films yet, be warned that there are a few spoilers ahead!

1. Being Caught Red-Handed In the World’s Biggest Pants

In one of the most memorable and iconic scenes from the first film – Bridget Jones’s Diary: The Edge of Reason – Bridget is about to get down to romance with Daniel Cleaver when he notices her 'absolutely enormous panties'. But while in the ’90s and early ’00s, it was all about itty-bitty underwear, these days we think blokes are a little more accepting of big pants (or maybe we’ve just stopped caring what they think…).

Get your Bridget-style big pants here and wear them with pride.

2. Not Getting the Memo About the Dress Code

In what is basically a cinematic interpretation of one of our most horrifying recurring dreams, Bridget goes to a tarts and vicars party as a Playboy bunny, complete with an ample bosom spilling out of a shiny corset. Except it’s not a tarts and vicars party at all, but a formal garden party. Shudder.

3. Putting Trust in the British Weather

For their first mini break, Bridget and Daniel headed off to the Great British countryside in his sports car. Naturally, Bridget decided to go for the chic headscarf and sunglasses combo that we all fantasise about. 'I suddenly feel like a screen goddess in manner of Grace Kelly,' she noted. 'Though perhaps ever so slightly less elegant under pressure.'

Yep, it was a gusty day, so the headscarf flew off and she arrived at the country manor with an enormous windswept mane. Which is, of course, when she bumped into Mark Darcy and Natasha (who looked immaculate, obviously).

4. Dressing Inappropriately for Work

When you’re even remotely buxom, things that look innocuous on more petite women can look a little… Sexual. Which is fine if you’re on a night out, but unfortunately not so much if you’re trying to be taken seriously at work. Bridget famously wore a see-through dress, as well as a succession of short skirts, to her office. Obviously Daniel Cleaver didn’t mind at all, but they weren’t ideal when she had to slide down a fireman’s pole on Sit Up Britain.

5. Getting It Wrong At a Festival

In Bridget Jones’s Baby, our heroine has a wild old time at Glastonbury. It can be hard knowing what to wear to a festival, especially if you don’t feel comfortable in tiny denim hot pants – and who does? But we’re still not quite sure what the reliably clumsy Bridget was thinking when she teamed white jeans with a white top. Obviously they didn’t stay white for long…

Plan next year’s festival wardrobe here and skip the head-to-toe white.

6. Trying To Look Cool While Pregnant

Around 0.2 per cent of women carry their baby bumps with grace and style – and they’re all supermodels. It can be hard to look chic and elegant while pregnant and, although Bridget definitely looks cute in some of her maternity outfits, the shaggy blue monster coat she sported in the new movie was not a good look. Admittedly it looks extremely cosy, though…

7. Forgetting She Needed to Move Around in Her Outfit

How many times have you slipped into a gorgeous outfit and then realised you can’t actually move in it? Bridget looked seriously hot in the gold dress she wore for Mark Darcy’s tedious Law Council dinner in The Edge of Reason, but the trouble with fishtail dresses is that you can’t actually move your knees – which might be fine if you’re able to stand in one spot all night sipping champagne, but not so much if you need to totter in from a taxi. This is, of course, why it’s better to buy clothes that actually fit rather than get hung up about the size on the label.

8. Not Realising She Was Totally Gorgeous

Bridget’s biggest fashion fail of all? Forgetting that Mark Darcy loved her just the way she was. After spending the night together, Bridget shyly wrapped herself in bedding. Mark was baffled – he LOVED her the way she was. So just remember, somebody thinks your curves are gorgeous, too…

Peruse nice lingerie that’s definitely more flattering than a duvet.
