A Guide To The Dennis Wheatley Heron Books Collection

This was a collection published in the early and mid seventies by Heron Books.  Heron set out to provide the public each with their own beautiful book sets and covered a wide range of European and American Literature.

The Dennis Wheatley Collection was issued in three phases, culminating in my experience with a 52 book collection.  I am told The British Library only recognise 49, and other souirces say there are 54, but with Heron Books deised we shall probably never know the truth of it!  Suffice it to say, in the UK the 48 sets is common, and the 52 set certainly available.

Variation and Condition

This series can produce a exceptionally beautifuyl sets. Unfortunately Heron used several printers and different paper qualities and I have frequently bought sets where (perhaps with years of mellowing of different dyes for the covers), some of the series bought by one of their clients can look oddly lighter or darker.  There can also be variation in the quality and the way the faux gilting  stands out.  It is therefore hard to guaranteea matching set.  If you shop internationally you will find that most sellers will qualify the quality of their books by "gilt may have been rubbed" or "colour variation expected".

The major thing to watch for is that there was an older brown / red set which used thicker paper than other prints, and it is very hard to match these exceot with each other

I will add to this as I learn more and as I can find time!  Tom
