One of the very first things you’ll consider buying for your imminent arrival is a place for your baby to sleep. A cot bed is one of the most practical items, as it provides a safe and comfortable place for your baby for the first couple of years as a cot and then transforms into a junior bed. Some cot beds even have a further life as a sofa. Look for a good range of features:
•    A high mattress position is very useful when your baby is tiny, as you will be frequently picking up and putting your baby down in the cot.
•    An elevated mattress can help avoid back strain.
•    A drop side is useful when placing baby onto the mattress.
•    Storage compartments for things such as baby’s bedding
•    Teething rails protect the wood and your baby’s gums
Try to see the cot bed in cot mode and bed mode. Some transform more successfully than others. Many cot beds come with matching furniture so that you can have a coordinated nursery. Don’t forget to measure your room to make sure that the cot bed will fit!

Boori Sleigh

eBay loves: Has a dropside; solid and will last.
Watch out for: On the large side.
RRP: £599

The Sleigh is part of a range of high quality, sturdy furniture by Boori including a chest of drawers, wardrobe, changer and bassinet. So you can have a completely coordinated look for your nursery. This cot bed is large, luxurious and made in a classic style from top quality materials. The wood is sustainable Araucaria timber from Queensland in Eastern Australia, so you're helping the planet. Choose your colour and finish from English Oak, Heritage Teak or White. The ends are curved to look like an old fashioned sleigh bed and the whole thing oozes elegance. Unusually for a cot bed, it boasts a drop side. The mattress can be altered between two heights, so that you can have your baby raised up high when he is tiny, saving backache. When your little one is too big for a cot, the sides are removed to transform it into a junior bed. When they eventually move on to a single bed, the cot bed changes again into a sofa, so it will continue to be a much-used part of your child’s bedroom furniture for years to come.

Tech Spec: Size: 157 x 86 x 101 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed, sofa.

eBay loves: Modern looking cot bed.
Watch out for: No drop side.
RRP: £349

This sleigh cot bed manages to combine a classic design with a modern look and the white finish on the solid pine will look good with any décor – it is also available in a dark walnut finish. It is a very strong and durable cot bed that will last through several babies and it has two protective teething rails on the side rails to keep the wood looking good and to keep your baby’s gums from getting sore when a gnawing phase starts – babies do chew their cots and anything else when they’re teething! Once your little one gets bigger and no longer needs a cot, you can transform it into a good sized toddler bed. The ends come apart, so that the bed has lower head and foot boards, making it a very neat little piece of furniture. It’s easy to assemble and will last years. Whilst it doesn’t have any matching items, it will coordinate perfectly with other white or walnut items from the Mamas and Papas range.

Tech Spec: Size: 99 x 75.5 x 160 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

East Coast Boston Cot Bed

eBay loves: Light and bright, solid looking.
Watch out for: No drop side and no storage.
RRP: £219

If you like a light, bright nursery, the East Coast Boston Cot Bed is a good choice. It has a white painted wooden finish, smooth, flat tops to the edges, slatted sides so that you can see your baby when she’s asleep and the end panels are solid. It also comes in an antique pine finish. The sides are fixed which makes it slightly more inconvenient to put your baby down to sleep but it does boast three mattress base heights. When you wish to convert it to a junior bed, which will be suitable for your child up to around 4 or 5 years, you simply remove both the sides and split the head and foot boards to make a nice little first bed. There are dressers, changing tables and wardrobes available from East Coast Nursery which will coordinate with the Boston, though they do not come as part of a range.

Tech Spec: Size: 147.5 x 79 x 93 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

Tutti Bambini Lucas Espresso Cot Bed

eBay loves: Has both a drop side and storage.
Watch out for: It keeps high ends as a bed, which doesn't look great.
RRP: £319

The Tutti Bambini Lucas Espresso Cot Bed is made from solid wood and although it has the appearance of a classic sleigh bed, it has a much more contemporary feel and the dark espresso colour make it great for those with modern homes. Lasting many years, it can be turned into a junior bed that is suitable up to about 5 or 6 years. When your baby no longer needs a cot, the sides can be removed. It doesn't have lower head and foot boards, which makes it look a little clumsy as a bed, but you can turn it into an elegant little sofa, which can be used for years to come in any room – just add cushions and a throw. It has a dropside, which can be lowered using just one hand – great for when you’re carrying a sleepy baby. There are teething rails on both sides and the mattress base can be adjusted through three positions, making it one of the most versatile cot beds around. Best of all, it has its own storage drawer beneath the mattress to keep spare bedding.

Tech Spec: Size 108 x 162 x 76 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed, sofa.

Obaby B is For Bear Country Pine Cot Bed

eBay loves: Looks as good as a bed as it does as a cot.
Watch out for: May not be as durable as some models.
RRP: £179.99

A cot bed that will suit most kinds of home, whether traditional or modern, this has a sweet carved bear motif on both ends of the cot. With three mattress heights, it will be easy to get your baby in and out, especially when you are using the highest setting, which is suitable for very young babies. As your baby gets bigger and can sit or pull himself up, you should drop the mattress base down to its middle and then to its lowest position for safety. There are teething rails that give a protective cover, helping protect your child’s delicate teeth and gums during teething. When you want to convert it into a junior bed, simply remove the sides and split the ends to give a nice low head and foot board. This can be used right up to around 4 or even 5 years of age, though it does not feel as well made as some models and may not last several children. It comes in country pine, or with a white painted finish. Obaby also has coordinating wardrobes, changers and cribs to complete your nursery.

Tech Spec: Size: 103 x 79 x 148 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

East Coast Rio Cot Bed

eBay loves: Great design, good for storage.
Watch out for: No drop side.
RRP: £304

It’s nice to see a cot bed that is of a rather more unusual design and the East Coast Rio Cot Bed has the appearance of high-end 1960's furniture. It will look good in your home whether you love retro chic or a more contemporary look. It has a solid pine frame in a dark wood finish, with panels of white on the ends and the drawer front and it also boasts a clever storage drawer for your baby’s clothes and toys. Inside, you’ll find a generous three mattress base heights, though the sides are fixed – it has no drop side, which makes it slightly more difficult to get a baby into it if she is asleep. When you want to turn it into a bed, the ends split to form lower head and foot boards and the sides come right off. This means you still have the drawer there to hold spare bedding and clothes. It also has castors underneath, so you can move it easily around the room when you need to. There’s even a matching chest of drawers to complete your nursery’s look.

Tech Spec: Size: 145 x 75 x 100 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

Cosatto Hogarth Cot Bed

eBay loves: Great style, especially in white, long life.
Watch out for: No drop side, no storage.
RRP: £280

This cot bed comes in a choice of a natural wooden finish or a striking white with oak touches. It has nicely curved and attractive solid ends and slatted sides. There are safety teething rails to protect your baby’s delicate little gums, and the mattress base can be altered through three positions. It starts life as a generously sized cot bed and then converts into a junior bed, suitable up to around 6 years, splitting the head and foot boards to make an attractive little place for your growing child to sleep. When that’s no longer needed, it can be used as a sofa (though this is not as attractive as some), so you will get years and years of use out of this one piece of furniture. There is no drop side, which could make it tricky to get your little one in and out but the highest base position will make it easier when your baby is very tiny and will help you avoid backache.

Tech Spec: Size: 148 x 89 x 103 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed, sofa.

East Coast Langham Cot Bed

eBay loves: Made from solid wood, three positions base.
Watch out for: No drop side, a little plain.
RRP: £279.99

The East Coast Langham Cot Bed is a classic looking cot bed suitable for any style of home. It has been constructed from solid oak and has oak veneers to finish it off and make it look luxurious. It has two fixed sides – no drop side, which might make it difficult to lie baby down when sleeping, especially when the mattress is at its lowest position. However, as it has three mattress positions you can use the highest when your baby is very tiny. It can be converted into a nice junior bed when your baby is getting bigger, which will last them up to around 5 or 6 years of age. The head and foot boards split in 2, so make lower ends for the bed but they are a little plain in design. You can also choose a chest of drawers and a wardrobe to complete your nursery from the same range.

Tech Spec: Size: 145 x 77 x 98 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

Saplings Kitty Cot Bed

eBay loves: Raised head end, choice of colour, good price.
Watch out for: No drop side, yellow finish a bit bold.
RRP: £199.95

The Saplings Kitty Cot Bed is cute and will be perfect for parents who want the nursery to look as if a little prince or princess has arrived. With a nice curve at the top of both head and foot board, it has slatted sides so that your baby can see the world and you have a choice of colour. The plain white frame is accented with pink or yellow panels, or you can have the whole cot bed in plain white.  While the pink is a nice, soft colour, the yellow is a bit bold – more of a mustard – which you might love or not. It has a three position mattress base which is good, as you may find it hard to lie a sleeping child in its lower position. It doesn’t have a drop side which is a shame, but as your baby grows out of the need for a cot you can remove the sides and split both head and foot board to make a sweet little bed, with the coloured panels forming the ends. One great feature of the Kitty is that you can have the mattress base slightly raised at the head end, which many babies find a more comfortable position especially if they suffer from reflux.

Tech Spec: Size: 144 x 73 x 91 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.

East Coast Angelina Sleigh Cot Bed

eBay loves: Classic and stylish design.
Watch out for: No drop side or storage.
RRP: £174.99

For those who prefer a traditional look with natural wood finishes, the East Coast Angelina Sleigh Cot Bed is perfect as it combines both. It is a large and sturdy cot bed that will last you for years and probably still be in service for second and third babies. It has solid panelled ends and slatted sides so that you and your baby can see in and out and the ends have a gracefully curving top rail. As well as the antique pine varnish, it’s also available in cocoa and pure white finishes. It has two fixed sides, which both have a teething rail on them to help protect your baby’s gums and the mattress can be adjusted through one of three base positions. It doesn't have a drop side, which would be handy. When you wish to change it from a cot to a junior bed, which will last your child up until they are around 5 or 6 years old, the sides come off and the ends split to give you nice low ends. A matching chest of drawers with a cot top changer and a generously sized wardrobe are available.

Tech Spec: Size: 144 x 77 x 91 cm. Used as: Cot bed, junior bed.
