6 of the best budget surround sound speakers to buy
If you’re new to surround sound, or simply don’t have a fortune to spend on amps, speakers and cables, then why not dip a toe in the water with a cheaper entry-level system? The good thing about these 5.1 speaker packages is that they will offer you pretty much all of the experience of a more expensive system, but still make you truly appreciate the importance of surround sound.
Expert Reviews contributing editor Ian Morris has taken a look at some of the budget options and has narrowed down your choices to six sets of surround sound speakers.

Klipsch Quintet 5
Klipsch Quintet 5
eBay loves: Beautiful design, compact
Watch our for: Lack of bass without a subwoofer
RRP: £400

Klipsch speakers have a nice sound and are much-loved in home cinema because of it. It’s perhaps not the biggest name, but it makes solid speakers that are incredibly well built, while not costing the earth. The Klipsch Quintet 5 is a 5.0 speaker system, so there’s no subwoofer included. Because the speakers are all quite small, you might find you want to add a subwoofer to fill out the sound.
That said, these compact speakers will do you proud for most material. They’re small enough to go on a bookshelf, or you could invest in some speaker stands to get them in the best position.

Onkyo SKSHT528
Onkyo SKSHT528
eBay loves: Bargain price, subwoofer included
Watch our for: Stereo and surround speakers are a touch small for larger rooms
RRP: £300

Onkyo makes some great value hardware and its speakers match well with its AV receivers. If you have an Onkyo amp, these are a great choice. The SKSHT528 is a 5.1 system with a powered sub. That will give you a pretty amazing sound, with lots of low bass for effects for explosions and such like.
The speakers are finished in a glossy black that should look good in any living room. There’s more than enough power here to fill a normal-sized room, although the stereo and surround speakers are a little small.

Monitor Audio MASS 5.0
Monitor Audio MASS 5.0
eBay loves: Styling and sound quality
Watch our for: Adding a subwoofer adds another £300
RRP: £450

One of the more expensive systems, but Monitor Audio produce some awe-inspiring speakers. Expect a really clear, crisp sound from the MASS 5.0. If you’re looking for the best quality, these would probably be the speakers to go for, though a subwoofer isn’t included. Adding one costs £400 more, so it might be worth seeing how these sound without one first.

JBL Cinema 510
JBL Cinema 510
eBay loves: Fantastic price, really compact system
Watch our for: Small speakers won’t suit larger rooms
RRP: £230

This subwoofer and a matching set of five surround speakers from JBL give a good, well-matched sound. They’re reasonably priced, too, given that JBL is an established name in the home cinema world and has been for some time. The speakers are all tiny and even the centre channel is a fraction of the size of some other packages, so this is another one that will really suit if space is at a premium.

Jamo A101 HCS5
Jamo A101 HCS5
eBay loves: Looks amazing, great wall-mountable subwoofer
Watch our for: Speakers feel a little cheap
RRP: £245

These tiny, but very well styled set of speakers from Jamo caught our eye because they’re ideal for a smaller home — and a smaller budget. The surround-sound speakers are very small and the subwoofer can be mounted on the wall to save even more space. A thoroughly clever idea and one we think makes a lot of sense.
Even though this system is small, it still sounds fantastic, so there’s really no compromise here — just a great all-around system.

Tannoy HTS-101
Tannoy HTS-101
eBay loves: Great bass from subwoofer, compact design
Watch our for: Not the most modern-looking
RRP: £350

The Tannoy HTS-101 can be bought as a 5.0, 5.1 or 5.1 set and are great value. Everything is compact, but the subwoofer can still deliver some powerful bass. That means that despite its size, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck. The subwoofer, as most are, is mains powered, so it will need to be positioned near to a power socket. Everything else should fit around you and those tiny speakers should be very easy to place in almost any living room.
