Six of the best wireless headphones to buy

It doesn’t matter whether you’re sitting in the lounge, watching movies late at night, playing games on your console or listening to music on the train — wires always get in the way. Luckily, you no longer need them. New wireless headphones use Bluetooth or a range of wireless audio standards to deliver clear, dynamic sound, free of fuzz and without any cables. You won’t get your cables snagged while you run or do the washing up, and there’s no need to have a trailing wire between your TV and the sofa. Tech expert Stuart Andrews chooses six wireless headphones that worth a listen.

Sennheiser RS170

Sennheiser RS170

eBay loves: Full sound in the headphones, almost no sound outside.
Watch out for: The leatherette ear pads can get itchy when you’re chain-watching a DVD box set.
RRP: £199

If you want headphones for watching late-night movies and TV, then the Sennheiser RS170 is a fantastic set. Kleer uncompressed audio transmission gives great sound without a hint of hiss and there’s enough bass for the most bombastic action movie — and the kind of clarity that means no line of dialogue goes unheard. You can pair up to four pairs of headphones with the handy transmitter stand, which also recharges the AAA rechargeable batteries. A virtual surround sound mode is another major plus and hardly any sound leaks out.

Logitech UE9000

Logitech UE9000

eBay loves: Having the choice of cables or wireless.
Watch out for: Your head will feel heavier, your wallet lighter.
RRP: £299

They might be pricey, but Logitech’s UE9000 set does it all. They’re luxurious, over-the-ear headphones with active noise cancellation and an internal microphone for hands-free iPhone calls. They even come with a cable, should you like one while out and about. Unplug the cable, however, and the sound doesn’t stop, thanks to a built-in Bluetooth receiver that supports the high-quality aptX audio standard. These are great-sounding headphones, too, with little sound leakage, effective noise cancelling and an energetic, bass-rich tone.

Plantronics BackBeat Go 2

Plantronics BackBeat Go 2

eBay loves: Being able to take them everywhere.
Watch out for: The batteries only last two to four hours.
RRP: £89.99

Wireless headphones don’t need to be big over-the-ear cans and nor do they have to cost the Earth. Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 gives you a set of wireless in-ear-monitors with Bluetooth built-in. They’re comfortable, moisture resistant and surprisingly light, and so ideal for exercise or use outdoors. They have handy in-line controls for changing tracks and changing volume, and the sound is clean and lively — if a little low on thumping bass. The only reason to quibble is that the built-in lithium batteries might not last long enough for a long journey.

Creative SoundBlaster EVO ZxR

Creative SoundBlaster EVO ZxR

eBay loves: That magnificent high-impact sound.
Watch out for: The styling means you might not want to wear them on the train.
RRP: £229

Gaming headphones don’t get better than the Creative SoundBlaster EVO ZxR, but this headset works just as well for music and movies, too. They’ll connect with a tablet, smartphone or games console through Bluetooth, and will even pair automatically with smartphones using NFC. They have a really wide soundstage, with a tight bass and excellent clarity. You can pinpoint enemies in Call of Duty, feel immersed in your favourite films, or just relax with music streaming from your phone. They also double as USB headphones for PC, complete with simulated 7.1 surround sound, and are comfortable enough to handle those all-night gaming sessions.

MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32

MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32

eBay loves: The big sound and the small price tag.
Watch out for: The carrying bag isn’t the most stylish.
RRP: £79.99

You might not know the name, but you’ll like the price and love the sound. The MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 is a lightweight, comfortable set that folds down neatly into a little velvet bag. They’re easy to set-up, with useful controls on the band next to the right-hand ear cup. Sound isolation is surprisingly good, too, so your big beats won’t drive everyone around the bend. Most importantly, they sound great, with a wide, open sound, a good crisp treble and a solid but not dominating low-end. Throw in a decent 12-hour battery life and you have a small-brand set of headphones that can take on big brand models at twice the price.

AKG K845BT

AKG K845BT

eBay loves: the elegant looks and serious tone.
Watch out for: It takes a few hours to charge the batteries, so keep the cable handy.
RRP: £250

AKG has consistently produced great headphones and its high-end AKG K845BT Bluetooth set doesn’t let the side down. Behind each comfortable leatherette ear pad sits a whopping 50mm driver, giving you a warmer, deeper tone than many Bluetooth headsets, without sacrificing AKG’s signature grasp of fine detail. With a closed back you get excellent noise isolation, with little sound travelling in or out to disturb. They’re easy to pair with a Bluetooth phone or tablet, and there’s a plug-in cable should the batteries run out — though this isn’t likely, since they last for eight hours. They can also be charged from the same micro USB charger as many smartphones.
