The top 5 Avengers collectables

Like if this guide is helpful
With Avengers: Age Of Ultron out this summer and the two-part Infinity War scheduled for 2018 and 2019, Marvel's team of superheroes are clearly here to stay. So with the Avengers enjoying a new burst of popularity just over 60 years after they first appeared, here's a look at a few of our favourite collectibles based on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Some are relatively affordable, while others might require more than a little bit of saving up...

Avengers #1

Avengers #1

An obvious one, this, but also a holy grail for true Avengers fans. Originally published in September 1963, the comic saw Ant-Man, Wasp, Hulk, Iron Man and Thor join forces for the first time ever, with Loki serving as the reliably mischievous antagonist. With spectacular artwork from industry legend Jack Kirby, the issue provided the perfect start for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Although far from the most expensive issue in comic book history, Avengers issue one is still a cherished item among collectors. Copies have sold for between £1600 and £2,000 on eBay of late, with one high grade edition fetching more than £4,200.

Iron Man nightlight

Iron Man nightlight

Looking for something Marvel-themed to brighten up your bedroom? Then these ingeniously-designed nightlights could be the perfect solution. Created to look as though a Marvel superhero's just crashed through your bedroom wall, the head and hand of each character's available separately. Our favourite? Iron Man, with his grim-faced mask and repulsor hand. Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer, Hulk's fist and Spider-Man's head are also available in the same range. Each one's available for about £25-£35.

Thor's Mjolnir hammer prop

If you're after a really special piece of film history, how about a life-size replica prop from The Avengers movie? Made from leather and metal using the original patterns and moulds from the film, it looks exactly like Thor's Mjolnir Hammer from Marvel's hit films. What's more, a relatively small run of 1,000 of these officially licensed pieces were made back in 2013 - and as you might have guessed, they don't come cheap. One recently sold in an eBay auction for $899.99, or around £589. If you're feeling really rich, Thor's replica helmet is also available for around the same figure.

Hot Toys Loki

Hot Toys Loki

Hot Toys is famous for producing some of the most sharply-sculpted and delicately painted collectible figures available, and their pieces based on Marvel's Avengers characters are no exception. Their 1/6th scale figurine of Loki is a great example: its resemblance to Tom Hiddleston's incarnation of the character, with the lips pressed into the same mischievous, bitter line, its detail extends right to the fabrich on his cloak and the freckles on his cheek. All that craftsmanship makes these figures expensive as a result - expect to pay about £400 for one - but with the popularity of Avengers proving evergreen, it's likely to become all the more sought as the years roll by. Anyone looking forward to this summer's Avengers sequel might want to check out Hot Toys' similarly intricate Ultron Prime figurine, too.

Signed Avengers poster

The great thing about Marvel's pantheon of superheroes is that, when you get them together for a poster, the results can be really striking in the hands of a great designer. The good news for would-be collectors is that copies of the immediately-recognisable 2012 Avengers movie poster can still be picked up for a relatively low price - the original one-sheet or UK quad poster (both measuring around 30" x 40" in size) generally sell for less than £20. Teaser posters for this year's Avengers: Age Of Ultron also fetch similar prices.
For a true slice of movie history, though, an Avengers poster signed by the cast will set you back quite a lot more - though not necessarily as much as you might think. After a fierce bout of bidding, an Avengers poster signed by such familiar names as Stan Lee, Joss Whedon and Scarlett Johansson (to name but a few) recently sold for £260. While it's always important to buy signed items from a reputable seller, an authentic, autographed Avengers poster could prove to be a worthy investment.
