It can be tough to come up with original gift ideas for brothers, sisters and friends, especially if you have a lot of people to buy for. So for those of you who are struggling – or haven't got time to think very hard – here’s 10 gifts to consider in time for Christmas.

10. Office items

If you can bring a smile to a recipient’s face when they look at the lovely little gift sitting on their desk during a stressful day in the office then consider it job done.

A few ideas include self-stirring mugs, pun calendars, crazy golf stationery, mini-games and even cures for snackaholics or text addicts via the power of herbs.

For those workmates who brighten up your day with their, ahem, eloquence the anti-sarcasm spray or bullsh*t button could suffice – or perhaps a desktop drumkit to drown them out completely.

9. Event tickets

An easy get-out if you’ve paid attention to someone's likes and dislikes.

Tickets to the cinema, a gig, a sporting event, a theatre show – or of course a voucher for any of these – is a simple and not-necessarily-expensive gift.

There's also an added bonus as you can buy two – and go along yourself.

8. Board games

Yes, people still play board games, and they’re sociable – unless of course, you all fall out over a petty rule dispute.

Rather than watching these quizzes on TV, why not actually play them instead: Pointless, The Chase, Eggheads, The Cube and Mr and Mrs family edition. Or if ‘real’ game shows aren’t your cup of eggnog, then consider Mrs Brown’s Boys or Take Me Out. For retro fun, keep an eye out for Wheel of Fortune, Saved By the Bell, Only Fools and Horses.

The old favourites, such as Cluedo, Trivial Pursuit and the many variants of Monopoly (Empire, Walking Dead, Despicable Me and Marvel to name a few), are classics for a reason, or perhaps you should brave the haze of Christmas celebrations and try an intellectual game, such as Articulate or Mastermind.

7. Quirky

Anything goes with this one, from a Christmas mug jumper, a legless pirate corkscrew to a mobile phone holder that hooks around the plug while the phone charges.

We liked the Underwater Light Show ball that turns your bath into a funky disco, the juggling poo soft balls, a Yeti glove for scraping your car window, and the men's comdey inflatable crotch 'for cheats and posers'.

Personalised coasters, framed pictures and canvases are always a safe gift, while the old reliable crazy socks might be a fitting present for those with cold feet.

6. Toys

As a quirky, early Christmas gift the Lego Star Wars advent calendar can’t really be surpassed for the geek in your life. In fact, if you’re buying for younger people, toys from the Lego Movie may be the final piece in the Christmas puzzle for 2014.

The other ‘in-things’ this year are wi-fi interactive dolls, Frozen characters, Minecraft figures, and the thrillingly-named Transformers Stomp and Chomp toys.

5. Books

Mary Berry and Jamie Oliver are two of the culinary heavyweights who have yet again produced work for Christmas, while fact freaks will enjoy the Guinness World Records and Pointless reference books.

Look at the charts and pick something relevant to your recipient: for example, a book on self-motivation and management will suggest to your brother or sister that you think they're heading for big things (it could also mean that they need a kick up the backside, but we won’t tell them that).

Failing that, a subscription to their favourite magazine should suffice, although this might take a little sneaky research.

4. Personalised T-shirt

Your mate’s got that saying. You know, the one about boyfriends or tea, or that thing Phoebe said in Friends. Maybe you want to remind your brother of that shocking stag do in Amsterdam, or give him a constant reminder of that brilliant photo of the all-conquering football league team he plays for.

A personalised T-shirt, hoodie or vest is a great present; cheap and cheerful, but with just the right level of thought and design to bring a smile to someone’s face. Make sure you order it early.

3. Drinks

For the person in your life who enjoys a bit of Christmas cheers – if, of course you can lever his or her glass out of their hand first.

A giant beer boot glass will allow for much hilarity during the festive season, especially if you buy the five-pint version. An unusual bottle opener will be popular, or how about a glass from their favourite country – such as a stylised German pint glass or Italian wine glass – perhaps engraved? Sounds like a perfect gift for him

If you can’t find the correct vessel you could go for a fridge magnet, or if you want to push the boat out a little, a wall sign of their favourite beverage. Nothing shows adoration for a friend more than a neon Heineken or bar open sign, to be placed in the kitchen or lounge just in time for a boozy new year house party.

2. Eating

Chocolate, cheese, dried meats, grow-it-yourself herb gardens or chillies or a full-blown hamper should satisfy the most gluttonous gastronome.

For an unusual and cheap stocking filler, why not look overseas – particularly America. There are some fantastic US-themed food stores online that prove you’ve gone for something a little extra as a small gift in the form of snacks, treats.

Whisper the words Hershey’s or Reece's Pieces and you’ll send someone with a sweet tooth wild – throw in American M and Ms, Wonka candy, Jelly Belly Ice Cream Parlour Mix, Flintstones-themed Fruity or Cocoa Pebbles, or any of the other sweet stuffs from across the pond.

1. Technology

Your recipients may think they’ve got every gadget going, but there’s always a little slice of electronics that can make life just a little bit cooler or easier.

For example, the smartphone film scanner, which can process 35mm film stock and slides directly onto your mobile phone or social media sites – perfect for old photos that are in danger of getting damaged. Or how about a stereo amp for your smartphone?

Or how about something for the fitness fanatic of the family? Check out the Fitbit activity tracker range!

And if you’re really stuck you could opt for an Apple voucher – their smart watch is on its way this spring.
