10. Hobbies

A tricky one, particularly if you’re buying something that requires technical expertise, but get it right and everlasting love will be yours.

There are ways of guaranteeing you achieve this, perhaps by making enquiries to his or her friends or approaching specialist websites for advice. Plectrums, songbooks and relevant tablet/computer applications are perfect for musicians; arts and crafts materials are good for painters, and quirky kitchen implements will amuse budding cooks.

Bonus points: keep an ear out throughout the year and make a note of times your partner says: "I’ve always wanted to try brewing beer/fishing/playing the guitar/crochet". Then buy a beginner's guide to said hobby and some equipment – easy.

9. Sport

A simple but great idea for a football or rugby fanatic: old shirts. Find out what your partner’s team was doing in a certain year (such as winning cups or promotion) and look for the jersey from that season. Bonus marks if it’s signed.

Alternatively, tickets for upcoming games, DVDs, old programmes and signed pictures are all guaranteed winners.

New equipment, such as trainers, wristbands, boots and training tops aren’t romantic, but make for practical additional gifts for him.

8. Clothing

If you’re buying clothes for your loved one, make sure it's practical and stylish; one quirky t-shirt will not suffice.

Predictions for the big guns in 2015 are Gucci, Chloe, Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger and Dries Van Noten among others. Not cheap, but worth mega-brownie points.

For men, scarves, stylish coats, high-quality jumpers or sweaters from the likes of Crew and FCUK, or good shoes will be a strong gift for both work and social occasions.

7. Toiletries

These are tried and tested gifts ideas, but you can still add a twist.

If your partner has a favourite brand try buying them a product that they may not have tried before.

For example, if you’re buying perfume try another scent from the same company or, even better, buy a just-released product – visit the company's website for inspiration or for additional products in the range, such as body lotions and shower gels.

Further accessory ideas include luxury towels, smart washbags and electric razors.

6. Novelty

Imagine the joy on your partner’s face on Christmas morning when he or she unwraps their mystery gifts to find the following: a chocolate willy roulette game, a joke ‘beer prescription’ medicine jar, or a velcro knife throwing kit.

Charity shops and car boot sales are a great source of cheeky novelty gifts, along with shopping online. If you can personalise them in some way, perhaps by adding your partner's face or name to the box, then expect added laughs.

Cool gifts include a stylophone, a water bomb launcher, funny aprons and LED coasters. And once the alcohol is flowing you might actually want to play one of the novelty games. Instant air hockey only requires a table, as does dining table ping pong.

5. Drinking

We love this quirky wine bottle glass – a 750ml glass that’s shaped like a bottle, which will fulfil all your red or white needs in one go.

For those who like a slightly stronger winter tipple, port sipper glasses with stabilising legs and a tail-like handle will warm the belly.

Real ale enthusiasts will love an authentic beer paddle and glasses – essentially a long tray with a handle perfect for housing four little taster glasses just begging to be filled with Belgian lagers or British real ales. Your partner's favourite brewery might produce selection boxes or special Christmas brews, perfect for a Christmas Day pint or three.

4. Technology

A piece of advice – if an item is coming out in the new year it MAY be acceptable to pre-order a major technology present, as long as you tell your partner beforehand and buy them something to open on the day.

As an alternative we suggest the Konstruktor Build Your Own SLR camera, which apparently only takes two hours to build and will teach you how a 35mm film camera works.

Other sources of pleasure include: radio controlled helicopters or drones, smartphone projectors, an iduck wireless speaker for the bath, wearable technology, such as wristbands and smartwatches, or software/lenses/apps – trust us on the last one, men will be happy even if it scores zero for romanticism.

3. Eating

For the food connoisseur an Italian cheese kit, a crème brulee set (including blowtorch), curry, steak or Thai ‘nights in’ with spices and dips, and a Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Champagne and trio truffles gift set offer some inspiration.

The days of simple chocolate selection boxes might be slightly old-fashioned, but we still think they’re a winner.

Feel free to upgrade to luxury boxes such as Thorntons or Hotel Chocolat, and don’t forget little bars and packets as stocking fillers.

2. Personalised

Prepare early for personalised gifts as many people have the same idea and shops can get busy – don’t leave it until mid-December. Options include Champagne bottles with messages, glassware, calendars, mugs, chocolate bars – even hammers!

For something a little more unique you could try a personalised doormat (cue jokes from visitors about that being a metaphor for your relationship), a Hollywood-style Star of Fame, egg cups, and planter boxes.

Sentimental gifts such as canvas pictures will last forever

1. Sentimental

Subtly different to personalised, as these gifts have more emotional value.

We’re talking ‘favourite things’ wall prints listing your loved one’s most beloved things in life.

We’re talking calendars of the two of you on holiday, with your children or pets, or just happy.

We’re talking a canvas print of your child holding a slate board which states how much she loves her mummy or daddy, giant maps of journeys you’ve taken together across the world, and pop-art style pictures of the two of you. Get the tissues ready.
