1. Fold Out

These are the most basic of sofa beds. More recently they have been designed within a wooden frame, making them a more solid and permanent piece of furniture, but they then have the disadvantage of not being able to be thrown where ever you want them. The more traditional style has been very popular with young people – it was cheap, space saving  and really easy to just lay about on. It was literally just three foam sections  that folded up in such a way that you had a base and a back to your chair and when unfolded would give you a mattress.

2. Air Sofa Bed

Perfect for occasional use, the good old air bed has evolved and you can actually buy a sofa bed version. You may think this is more ideally suited for camping - so you can set up a 'two-for-one' piece of temporary furniture a sofa wherever you end up (it doesn't seem a very long term solution!)  but it might also work for guests who may want to spend a little more time in their room - maybe elderly relatives who fancy a rest away from your hectic home life? There is, of course, the benefit of being able to deflate it and put it away.

3. Futon

The good old futon...timeless and stylish. For such a simple piece of furniture it delivers on so many fronts. It looks cool if you are a teenager and sophisticated if you are, well, a little older. It is completely  functional – yes lower to the ground which is not everybody's cup of tea as a main sofa - but as place to slouch in a study or snug it's perfect. Of course with the option for it to lay flat and become a bed the comfort of the giant cushion needs to be considered.

4. Gaming Chair

How on earth did we get to a point in this technology-orientated world where there are gaming chairs that recline giving you the option to sleep?
For the purpose it's designed for, it's perfect - and it's most certainly a step up on the old fashioned bean bag.
For anything other than a teenage den though it probably isn't the best choice!

5. Sectional Sofa Bed

These comfy little beauties are a mixture of morning breakfast show set and caravan sleeping (but far more comfortable!). They are L shaped sofas that you can take apart like a puzzle, re-jig to make some huge sleeping area. They can be pretty expensive, but will probably be your main sofa – so invest wisely. These are best for rooms with plenty of space.

6. The Kids' Choice

Children love the 'mini me' world. If you've got room, it's always worth kitting your child's room out with their own mini sofa bed. Based on the simple fold out design, it is perfect for sleepovers and offers them somewhere to go and read.

7.The Hidden Mattress

The traditional sofa bed! On the outside it looks like a normal three or four seater sofa, on the inside it has a complete hidden bed – mattress, springs, legs, the whole lot folded up with a spring action mechanism. The theory of this design is that neither the sofa or the bed compromise on comfort. Therefore it can be used as your main seating in the living room but also serves as very comfortable guest sleeping arrangements.

8. The Recliner

These are very chic and a relative newcomer to the sofa bed market. Basically the back of the sofa reclines back flat giving you a double bed...it's as easy as that. It's a brilliant space saver for students but, equally, can look quite retro and modern.

9. The Day Bed

The day bed has been around for years - it turns the 'sofa bed' on it's head in that it is primarily a bed that has a back and sides that make it suitable to use as seating during the day – again a good idea for students and young people who may be struggling for space. Chuck lots of cushions on it in the day to make it even more comfortable!

10. Love Seat Sofa Bed

This is simply a smaller version of the metal sofa bed – perfect for bedrooms or small studies, breakfast rooms etc – where you want something that looks like a sofa, can act like a bed but is smaller for rooms where space is at a premium.
