The iPad Air was a real game-changer

1. Apple iPad Air

With its sleek design and lightweight feel, the Apple iPad Air was a game-changing moment in the evolution of the tablet.
It was the fifth full-size iPad but it felt like a world away from what had come before thanks not only to its 469g weight but also to its rapid operating speed.
You get a world-class Retina screen which crams thousands of pixels into 9.7in and the easy-to-use Apple operating system, which is really easy to update.

2. Apple iPad Mini 2

At 437g, the iPad Mini 2 weighs exactly the same as the Mini 3 and has almost exactly the same features, with the exception of fingerprint-recognition technology.
And if that isn't a good enough reason to buy, the Mini 2 also holds its own against its bigger, more expensive brother, the Air.
It takes the Apple operating system and apps, Retina Display and two great cameras and places them into a 7in tablet you can pick up and put in your bag.
There’s also 10 hours of battery life and a snappy processor, meaning you’re likely to have enough power whether you’re working, gaming or streaming TV programmes.

3. Sony Xperia Z2

While it may have been overshadowed by more recent releases, the Sony Xperia Z2 is still a great tablet – and one that’s slimmer and lighter than even the iPad Air.
Its screen may have been criticised for a lack of sharpness brought on by low resolution, but its use of innovative Live Colour LED technology still makes for some incredible colours.
There are also some great little hardware quirks such as the speakers on each end of the tablet, which allow for impressive sound separation, and the fact it’s completely dust-proof and waterproof.
Inside, there’s a powerful Snapdragon processor that makes browsing pictures and listening to music on the Walkman an effortless and enjoyable experience.

4. Google Nexus 7

Apple may have things covered when it comes to ground-breaking apps, but for watching movies and reading books, the Google Nexus is top of the class.
Plus, from instant access to information about the news and weather to voice recognition, you still get a raft of top features.
But it’s in the multimedia world where the Nexus excels thanks to its excellent screen, nine-hour battery life and advanced processor.
And while it may be a little low on storage space with just 8GB and 16GB options, the Google Play store allows you to rent films cheaply without clogging up your hard drive.

5. Galaxy Tab 3

Not only does the Galaxy Tab 3 look great from the outside, it  has some great features going on inside to make it a serious contender on the tablet market.
One of these is the addition of a microSD slot, which allows you to boost the storage space on either the 8GB or 16GB versions with a separate memory stick if you need more room for films and photos.
The 7in Galaxy’s screen may not be the best out there, but you still get a top operating system, good battery life and access to a host of apps and games at a pretty competitive price.

Its durable design means it will keep the kids entertained with films, games and books without taking as much damage as less well-built models if it gets thrown around.

This is the perfect device to take advantage of Amazon’s library of 22 million films, books and more as you get a really high-quality screen and great sound.
While it may be best to avoid if you want something to work on when you’re on the train, it’s almost unbeaten when it comes to entertainment.
The Fire comes with Dolby sound and provides easy access to Amazon’s cloud storage, meaning you don’t have to clog up the 8GB or 16GB hard-drive options with all your media.
There are also some other really nice touches, such as the X-ray feature, which tells you who’s on screen when you’re watching a film.

It comes with a separate keyboard which you can attach to the tablet when you want to type long emails and other documents.
There’s also a Google Android operating system and an advanced processor, meaning watching films and streaming TV programmes is simple too.
Although many similar devices have been released since, the Transformer Prime is still a compelling option, especially when you consider its 18-hour battery life.
