Top 5 Chromebooks

What are Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are a new type of computer designed to get things done faster and easily without the complex nature of Windows or Mac OS.  They run on Chrome OS that has cloud storage built in and multiple levels of security. They tend to be lighter and more portable with small SSD drives and memory as a lot of the processing and storage is done in the cloud.
Google has helped keep the cost down by working hard with their partners to offer the right specifications to cost, so the software and system is affordable and there are no extra bills for antivirus and new annual Microsoft office versions etc to buy.

They don't work with some types of software which lots of people are familiar with, such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop etc. but there are lots of apps available from the Google app store that can still achieve the same thing just in a different way.

Some of the most popular apps to replace the common programs are:
  • Microsoft Office 2013 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) use Google Drive (docs, sheets, slides)
  • Skype use Google hangouts
  • ITunes use Google play music
A good, fast always on internet connection helps get the best out of a Chromebook but you can still use them offline to :
  • Create and edit presentations with Google Slides
  • Create and edit spreadsheets with the new Google Sheets
  • View and RSVP to events with Google Calendar
  • View and edit photos saved with the built-in photo editor
  • Enjoy mp3 files or movies with the built-in media player
  • Read and write emails with Offline Gmail
  • Write a note or make a list with Google Keep
  • Write and edit documents with Google Docs

Things to consider are

  1. Chromebooks run on Chrome OS so they only run apps available for Chrome OS, these apps do a good job but might not have as many features as commercial packages.
  2. Printers need to connect to Google Cloud Print.
  3. You cannot access things like Ipods, iphones, etc although they will charge.
  4. No CD/DVD everything has to be downloaded or saved to thumb drives etc.

I have chosen the top 5 Chromebooks currently available, you may find a different model suits you better this is just as a basic guide.
