Magnetism and Stainless Steel Bolts
While not all stainless steel bolts attract magnets, most do. The types to choose from include ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardened. Austenitic stainless steel bolts are non-magnetic, so if you need non-magnetic bolts, go with this type. Fortunately, austenitic stainless steel bolts are the most common type sold, so finding a non-magnetic bolt should not be difficult.
Stainless Steel Bolt Temperature Resistance
Different grades of stainless steel bolts hold up better in different temperatures. Know how well the grade you are considering will fare, depending on the temperatures involved with your project. For example, stainless steel with a grade of 304 cannot withstand continuous heat above 925 degrees C, while bolts with a grade of 310 work with a continuous temperature of 1,150 degrees C. If you put stainless steel bolts in temperatures above what their grade can withstand, you run the risk of them deteriorating. The higher the heat resistance is on the bolts, the better it is for your project. This is especially true if you plan to use them in welding projects or locations where heat is an issue, such as in automobile projects.

Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel bolts are not much stronger than other types of bolts, including aluminium bolts. However, people choose them for their heat and water resistance. However, some stainless steel bolts are stronger than others are. If strength is what you need, know the grade of bolt to look for. A grade of 304 has a significant amount of tensile strength as compared to other stainless steel bolts. However, if your project is basic and strength is not a concern, any stainless steel grade will do.
