Radio Times came up with a list of top family films-but should you read them, or their book equivalent? Well, quite a lot don't have a book equivalent-the top one E.T. for example but here is the list of the ones I can do.
2: The Wizard of Oz/The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Book: 4.5/5 (33 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (93 reviews)
Result: The book and the film seem to be as good as each other-though more people have of course seen the film.
3: Mary Poppins
Book 4.5/5 (3 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (56 reviews)
Result: The book doesn't seem all that popular at all. Maybe the film is better in this case...
4: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Book: 3.5/5 (14 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (46 reviews)
Result: Watch the film.
Book: 4/5 (4 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (138 reviews)
There's some bias here as the book is not so well known, but I think this counts as a dead heat.
7:Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Book: 4.5/5 (48 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (45 reviews)
For the record the new film had 117 reviews and was 3.5/10. For once I think the book wins in both cases.
9: The Jungle Book
Book 4.5/5 (10 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (99 reviews)
The later film was 3.5/5 and had 4 reviews. Another dead heat.
10: The Sound of Music/The Trapp Family Singers.
Book: 4.5/5 (8 reviews)
Film: 4.5/5 (62 reviews)
Another tricky one-no one knows about the book. Possible dead heat?
Hopefully, I'll do the rest of the list later on.
