1. Cirque le Soir

Cirque le Soir is one of London’s most talked-about clubs. The entrance to this Mayfair club might be unassuming, but the interiors are anything but.

Inside you’ll find a circus-themed extravaganza, complete with fire-eaters, snake charmers and stilt walkers, plus a top line-up of international DJs and mixologists. No wonder Lady Gaga, Madonna and Jude Law have all been spotted here.

What to wear: bustier top. Team it with a pencil skirt or hotpants.

2. Dalston Superstore

If it’s a night out in London’s cooler-than-thou East End you’re after, then the place to head is Dalston Superstore.

Again the exterior, in scruffy Kingsland High Street, looks unpromising, but inside you’ll find a party crowd of hipsters who know how to have a good time. Music-wise, you’ll hear everything from disco and electronica to hip-hop and Chicago house.

What to wear: bustier dress. East Londoners tend to keep it more casual than their West London counterparts, so while you’ll still need to pay attention to what you’re wearing, you can afford to keep it a bit more low-key. Or go for a bustier top but dress it down with a pair of skinny jeans or pair it with some floral summer trousers.

3. Whisky Mist

This one-time celebrity favourite is back after an extensive refurb, and is more opulent than ever. You’ll still find the range of international DJs and super-premium whiskies, but now it’s all dramatic, Gothic-style décor and high-end glamour. There’s also a new sister club, Rusty Nail, that’s open for late-night shenanigans.

What to wear: corset dress. West End clubs like this one expect you to look your best, so it pays to make an effort. Choose one with glam factor in spades and you'll really get you noticed in the crowd.

Product guide: Bustier

As Madonna knew back in 1990, there’s only one real way to make an impact, and that’s with a bustier.

Her bustier tops were custom-made by Jean-Paul Gaultier, and you can still catch a look at them at the Barbican’s Gaultier exhibition, which continues until Monday 25 August. Failing that, you can always buy your own.

But who makes the best ones? Agent Provocateur are masters at this sort of thing, and you can guarantee that the black, L’Agent by Agent Provacateur satin corset will be as flattering and well cut as it is sexy. Vivienne Westwood is another designer who knows how to make a corset. After all, she’s been doing it for decades.

But bustier tops don’t always have to be daring and sexy. Labels like Red Valentino and Isabel Marant make low-key, easy-to-wear versions, which would look great with a tuxedo jacket slung over the top. And bustiers also make great beach clothing, if you’re looking for a bit more coverage than the average bikini provides.

Meanwhile, if you want to get the look of a corset without going the whole hog, try an off-the-shoulder top instead.
