Many options exist to arm against seasonal allergies and find some measure of allergy relief. Spring and summer grass pollens are often the worst offenders, although the hazel and yew pollens that appear in February and the moulds that flourish all year also cause their share of problems.
Keep Allergy-Inducers Outdoors
A home is not a castle when pollen and dust-borne moulds successfully invade it. To keep pollen and dust at bay, owners must halt this invasion. During pollen seasons, they should keep windows closed in the early morning and evening when pollen counts are the highest. Changing clothing after returning home reduces the risk of distributing outdoor pollens around the home. Occupants should bathe and wash their hair before bedtime to keep pollen away from pillows and bedding. Children's soft toys are also pollen magnets. If they are not machine washable in high temperatures, owners can place them in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any pollen, moulds, and bacteria before washing them. Dusting with damp cloths or microfibre cloths is most effective at capturing dust and pollen.
Arm Against Allergens Outdoors
People with pollen allergies can still enjoy the outdoors if they take some precautions. Exercising and gardening is better on days with lower pollen counts and during lower pollen hours, instead of early in the morning or late in the afternoon. They can wear sunglasses to minimise the amount of pollen that gets into the eyes. Wrap-around sunglasses provide the best protection. Those with severe allergies might need to wear dust masks while gardening. Pollen counts may affect holiday planning, as well. A trip to the beach is more pleasant when allergies do not spoil the fun.
Treat Allergy Symptoms Promptly
Allergy tablets containing antihistamine block the allergic reactions that cause runny noses, itchy eyes, and scratchy throats and help relieve these symptoms. Some people use medicated nasal sprays for the same purpose, or they irrigate nasal passages with saline sprays to rinse away pollens and refresh irritated tissues. Sprays that use corticosteroids reduce inflammation without significantly absorbing into the body. Other kinds of decongestants, such as hayfever tablets, may contain ingredients that raise heart rate and blood pressure when mixed with other medications. Users should not combine medications without the advice of a doctor. Medicated eye drops also work to relieve symptoms.
Keep Pollen and Moulds Out of Household Air
Using an air purifier removes both pollen and dust-borne moulds from household air, and everyone breathes easier. Ionic air filters emit ozone, which can cause the same symptoms as seasonal allergies. A HEPA air purifier or HEPA filters in the home's air filtration system capture tiny pollen and dust particles to give everyone allergy relief.
