Popular mythology has named W.W.1 souvenirs as "Trench Art" and gives the image of Tommy sitting in his trench making items out all the scrap brass lying around. However he would'nt have had the time or the tools to do this.Much of it would have been made behind the lines back at base in the engineering repair workshops, some of it would have been made when he returned home to Blighty with his wartime souvenires and old army badges. Most of the highly decorated and ornate pieces would have been made after the war in France or even India as souvenirs for sale to tourists visiting the graves of their loved ones. However they are still a poignant reminder of those times and well worth collecting in remembrance of those brave lads.
