On her 80th Birthday today (21/04/2006), Her Majesty The Queen announced the 2006 winners of The Queen's Awards for Enterprise, the UK's leading accolade for business success. There are 145 awards in total for a range of businesses.

One winner was VARLIGHT:

For the continuous development of the 'Varilight' dimmer switches and decorative electrical accessories, Doyel & Tratt Products Ltd (VARILIGHT) wins the award. The innovative, microprocessor-controlled, 'intelligent' dimmer switches feature overload protection, 'soft-start' to extend lamp life and low radio frequency interference, for both mains and low-voltage lighting. One variant of the product can be controlled remotely. A recent addition is a digitally dimmable fluorescent lamp which can save more than 80% electrical energy compared with normal light bulbs of equivalent output (Coming soon to my ebay store). New techniques have been developed to cope with the heat generated by power semiconductors and be radio interference suppressors close to sensitive low-current electronic components whilst ensuring that the total unit size was acceptable. The company and other manufacturers, to which is supplies component dimmer switch modules, satisfy a high proportion of the market.
