WANT TO BUY A NINTENDO Wii AND AVOID THE SCAMS?

I am a GENUINE buyer and seller of Nintendo Wii Consoles.  There are some scams on ebay at the moment and you may want to read this guide before making your decision to buy

I check the new listings and listing ending every day and am constantly amazed by the increasing number of what I will call FAKE consoles.  This is purely my interpretation and is not intended as an attack on the sellers of these consoles but you, as a potential buyer, need to be aware of the facts.

CONSOLE WITH 20, 30, 40 (or more top title games)

Please be careful if you are thinking of buying one of these very enticing deals, which are very reasonably priced.  They are usually not what they seem.

These consoles have usually been modified or chipped, usually with a device called a wiikey.  They are NTSC or JAP consoles (these are cheaper) which have been modified to play multi region games.

The games advertised in the listing are copies or backups and are not the original product.  There can be quality issues with the copies.

Clearly these consoles and games also have no resale value if you want to trade in your Wii and you would not be able to trade in at a high street store.

It is never long when a new console comes onto the market before the chipped version appears.  From bitter experience, these modified consoles do not last as long as the originals and there is no comeback or compensation as the warranty is immediately invalidated if modification has taken place.

HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO KNOW I AM LOOKING AT ONE OF THESE CONSOLES?

The following are usually featured somewhere in the listing which should alert you

a) The listing is only for 1 or 3 days. This is done so that ebay does not have time to monitor the listing and remove it from ebay if it contravenes their policy

NB ANY CONSOLE WHICH IS MODIFIED OR CHIPPED MAY NOT BE SOLD ON EBAY ACCORDING TO THEIR RULES

b) There is usually a fairly low BUY IT NOW price for what seems to be a fantastic deal (typically under £350)

c) All the games are shown in the listing are  the current top Wii games, which retail new at £39.99 in the shops

d) You will not see a photograph of the actual console and games you are looking at

e) There is usually a reference made in the listing to contact the seller prior to purchase to be advised, outside of ebay,  what you are buying

f) Typically the seller will not have high feedback

g) Often the seller is registered as private and you cannot see their feedback

h) Often the seller is fairly new to ebay

i)  The bidding will not show names of those who are bidding to avoid the possibility of the potential buyer being forewarned

j)  There will be a lot of small print which you must read

k) There is often a charge for returning the item if you find it wasn't what you thought it was

HOW CAN I BE SURE I AM BUYING A GENUINE Wii

a) A genuine seller will give you all the information you need in the listing

b) There will be photograph(s) of what you are actually buying

c) All policies will be open and not misleading

d)  The seller will have good feedback

e) Look to see if there is feedback for any other Wii sales

f) Bidding will be open and not private

g) Ask the seller the following questions if in doubt:-

Is the Console UK PAL?

Has the console been modded or chipped in any way?

When was the console purchased and is there a shop receipt for warranty purposes?

Does each game come with the box and manual?

Are the games originals, copies or backups?

You should be able to tell from the reply what the situation is

SHOULD I BUY THIS MODIFIED CONSOLE OR NOT?

The decision is yours.  If you want a console with all the top games and have the funds to spare, you may be willing to take the risk.

I do not have the authority to claim that these consoles are illegal, although I am aware NINTENDO and ebay have a view. Neither can I categorically say that this or that console is not genuine.  All I can do is point out some things which may alert you if you are looking for an unmodified console

Modified consoles have been around for years, but they do not conform to the manufacturers warranty if they go wrong and the copied games are usually not of the same quality

INSURANCE

Whichever console you buy, please insist on insurance for loss in transit.  If the console should go missing then you are only covered for £34 under the ROYAL MAIL scheme.  I do have another guide on this subject should you need more information
