A short introduction to costume jewellery and useful preservation techniques
Costume jewellery has become more popular in recent years due to recessions and price increases of precious jewellery.
You may be able to purchase several good quality costume jewellery pieces for the price of one precious metal or precious stone piece. Why pay more for something that you can only wear with one or two outfits, when you can buy an item to go with every outfit you own, for the same price or less?
Costume jewellery, more often than not is made up of alloy metals and sometimes crystals and semi-precious stones, making it cheaper to produce and a lot more affordable. Costume jewellery is an inexpensive alternative to that necklace or bracelet that you cannot afford, or do not want to pay so much for. Items will last a lot longer with proper care; the same applies to fine jewellery.
Several costume jewellery pieces are manufactured to replicate big brand name pieces or designs, whilst other
manufacturers take to producing their own styles and designs.
Department stores and high street clothing shops are where you will find costume jewellery every month of the year.
They prove a great addition to any outfit and they add that little something extra to that summer dress.
Here are 3 basic tips on preserving your pieces...
Avoid getting your jewellery wet or getting in the bath or shower still wearing your jewellery. Your jewellery will quickly loose colour and your items will appear very dull. Direct sunlight has a similar affect as well as spraying perfume and applying cosmetics with your jewellery on.
Take your items off and store them as you would store precious jewellery and they will last longer. Avoid keeping them out in the open where they might be knocked over or scratched.
Cleaning your items can be as simple as wiping with a damp cloth, using a can of compressed air, or even a mild polish, depending on the base metal of your piece. Keeping your crystals sparkling and your cocktail rings looking fabulous with a little bit of care every now and then.
The main thing to remember is that jewellery will last a lot longer if cared for properly. All jewellery tarnishes, precious or not and discolouration occurs over time with certain materials. Costume jewellery is a fantastic, inexpensive alternative to precious jewellery but remember that costume and fashion jewellery will not last forever.
If you feel naked without a necklace or bare without a bracelet then pick up a couple of costume jewellery pieces and you will have an item than you can wear every day that doesn't break the bank.
From shamballa to charm bracelets, glass beads to pendant necklaces there are many different styles to choose from and many different price ranges. Shop around for the best deal online and you will surely discover lots of fantastic pieces with very low price tags.
Jewellery is always a great eye catching addition that adds character and personality to one’s appearance; you can never have enough costume jewellery!
