Water is an essential and balancing element in the garden. Adding water to the garden adds a decorative and therapeutic element to the garden space that can be enjoyed by everyone. Plants require water to thrive and grow but garden visitors such as butterflies, bees and birds also need water.

Here are some water features that can be added to a home garden. These ideas range from simply adding water to a dish to building a custom back garden pond. This guide outlines the differing water features so you can choose the best one to suit your outdoor space.

Bird Bath

The simplest way to add a water feature to the garden is with a  bird bath. Bird baths are widely available and there are as many designs as there are personal tastes. Be sure to add a few stones to the bird bath so that butterflies, bees and birds all have a place to perch while they have a drink.

Maintenance of a bird bath is simple. Clean out the water every few days to keep it fresh and scrub the bath with a stiff brush and biodegradable soap every week.

Fountain

Fountains can be mounted on walls, bubbling in a pot, set over rocks or a decorative feature in a pond. Most fountains are a sculpture that comes with a  hose and a pump. Some may also need a basin to hold water below rocks.

Pond-in-a-Pot

If you have a small space, a Pond-in-a-Pot is a great way to add water to the garden. A Pond-in-a-Pot is essentially a water container garden. The most basic version is simply an outdoor container that is filled with water and stones or water plants. Look for containers without drainage holes or a removable plug.

You can purchase Pond-in-a-Pot kits that contain a water filter or bubbler to keep the water moving, which I highly recommend if there are mosquitoes in your area. Moving water deters mosquitoes from breeding in standing water and provides the lovely sounds of a water garden.

Waterfall

If you have a natural slope in your home landscape, a  waterfall might be the right water feature. Waterfalls can meander along the length of a property or add interest to a part of the garden. Waterfalls can spill into a pond or be pondless.

Pondless waterfalls give you the sound and trickle of water and they can be a lot less maintenance than caring for a pond.

Water Garden

A water garden is a built-in pond that supports wildlife, water plants and fish. While the thought of installing a water garden may be overwhelming, there are plenty of  pond kits you can purchase to make the process much easier. There will still be major landscape work required to dig a basin into your landscape and add the decorative rocks and landscape material to build the pond but it can usually be done in a weekend.

As with any garden, water gardens require regular maintenance. You'll want to make sure that you maintain the plumbing and pumps throughout the year. Overall, the beauty and enjoyment of a water garden often outweigh the efforts of installing it for many home gardeners.
