There are many different options on the way to buy but
what is the best? and the safest?
These are questions that we have from
various friends and clients and it can be a bit daunting when you first start
collecting in any field of antiques or collectables so let's start with the
options of buying.
- Finding a good dealer it can take a while but is worthwhile
- To find a good dealer, ask questions, as you will need a dealer who has the
information you require do not be afraid to ask, if you want to know more about
a piece they have, then do ask.
- Ask specific questions to see if they know a lot about there field of
expertise, some good questions to ask is about the age of the item, paintress,
designer and what justifys the price.
- These are all things that a dealer who specialises in there specific field
should know this is what you are coming to these people for and if they do not
know or are not willing to disclose this information then I suggest you move
onto the next dealer.
- Sometimes dealers will need to check up something specific the exact date a
painter worked, this is fine but they should at least know the general date ie:
1930's to 1940's and then get back to you with the specifics.
- Ask for an invoice with specific details so that it authenticates the item
if they are not willing to give you this, ask yourself why? Is it fake? Are they
register? Is it stolen?
- A genuine dealer will always give you there contact details and information
if asked, do not get caught out
- The best dealers will have phone support, e-mail support, web-sites and much
more

What are the Pros?
- A private dealer will have a larger selection of your specialists items so
no need to travel the world to start or add to an interesting collection
- You will build up a rappor with your dealer and they will be able to give
you the information you require on any pieces that they have or advice on what
is up and coming, they will also be able to tell you what to stay away from. As
this may not be obvious to the novice but dealers have had experience of the
pitfalls as this is a daily occurance for them and they can help you.
- They will be able to authenticate the item, no need to worry about if you
have brought a very expensive fake as they will guarantee it genuine(Fakes are
worthless however well they are done)
They will do the leg work to find you the pieces that you require (Many
dealers travel the length of the country for there clients needs and have a lot
of contacts within the trade to get you what you want)
What are the Cons?
- Finding a good dealer, making sure they are genuine (as explained above)
- You do pay more for this service ( Authentic items, Information, no travelling, large selection of items, Web-sites, phone support, e-mail support)
