Cats and Litter Trays
Using a litter tray normally is a simple thing for a cat. A few simple rules will help young cats to do this regularly.
Number of Trays
If possible have at least one litter tray more than there are cats in your household.
Place
Cats want to feel secure and undisturbed when they are using a litter tray. A quiet spot is ideal, away from the place where they are fed, and easily accessible at all times.
Size and Type
Generally speaking – the larger the more comfortable. A rim prevents litter from being carried to the surroundings. A dome keeps the smell within the tray, a fact which sensitive cats may object to. In that case a filter can help. The dome should be high enough, so that the cat has her head free when she is using the litter tray and can keep an eye on her surroundings.
Cleaning
Cats are very clean animals and don’t like soiled litter trays. Therefore the soiled litter should be removed once or twice a day. Depending on the kind of litter and the frequency of use, the complete litter should be renewed once a week or once a month, and the tray should be washed out with a mild detergent.
