I have been mixing cement for years, mainly for fairly small jobs around the house, and always made a mess on the driveway or road. I have found that there is a tremendous amount of hosing down to do after the simplest job. I tried mixing it in a bucket, but the mix was either too weak or too strong. My son who was 12 at the time was observing my antics, and he quite casually said DAD why don't you mix the dry sand and cement in one of your old coal bags third full, and toss the bag around so that it gets mixed thoroughly BEFORE you add the water. I have been using this system now for 25 years and NO mess. We occasionally buy coal or smokeless fuel in bags at the garage, and I have learnt how to unpick the stiching by carefully observing what way the stiches lie, I had to pass this knowledge on to the general public, as I am 77 and don't have immortality.
