the auctioneer's view

In response to the correspondent's earlier comments, I can only say that the writer was probably dealing with the 'wrong' auction house. Generally, auctioneers will sell to the highest bidder irrespective of whether they are on-line or not, and precedence is given to the earliest identical bid.

I am the senior auctioneer at Lloyd Cameron and Partners of Warrington and North Wales salerooms, and we encourage ALL forms of bidding irrespective of how they are received - ie 'live', absentee commission bidding, telephone bidding or in-house.

Furthermore, I visit numerous other auction houses throughout the UK, and have never experienced the problem experienced by the ealier writer.
