This is your opportunity to own a rare miniature 1/144 die-cast replica of this famous German WWII Bomber. this superb and 'enormous' pre-painted and assembled model from Atlas Military Giants of the Sky series requires only installation of the undercarriage to complete. These are a simple push fit. It also has an optional and attractive heavy duty black flying display stand bearing the name of the bomber in silver.

The Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin) was a long-range four engined twin prop. bomber of the Luftwaffe. This troubled aircraft was the only heavy bomber built in large numbers by Germany during World War II. Aircrews nicknamed it the Reichsfeuerzeug (Cigarette Lighter of the Reich) due to the early versions' engines tendency to catch fire. However, by war’s end, the He 177 proved to be the most reliable, rugged and technically advanced bomber of the Luftwaffe
An unusual feature of the airplane was the use of twin engines in each nacelle driving a single propeller, which contributed to the early engine fire problems.
The insistence of The Air Ministry for the ability to dive-bomb started the He 177 down the vicious circle, endemic to German aeronautical over-engineering. Beset by many other technical difficulties in development and service, the plane had a troubled life. This was in part due to overly optimistic design requirements of long range, high speed, a large bombload, and even as a dive bomber. Though Goering forbade Heinkel to develop a version with four separate nacelles, Heinkel nevertheless produced prototypes of the Heinkel He 177B (later renamed into the Heinkel He 277) which was not produced in numbers.
He 177A-5 was powered by coupled DB 605 engines (called DB 610) and was able to carry a more substantial bomb load. But more important were the improvements concerning the cooling issues for the engines by setting a power limitation of the more powerful engines. This resulted in greater reliability. The A-5 never saw much service before production was stopped in 1944 due to the fuel shortages. KG 40 and KG 1 "Hindenburg" received only few A5s.
During the catastrophic raid against London (Operation Steinbock or Baby Blitz) with an average loss rate of 60% for each type used (Ju 88, Ju 188, He 111, Do 217), the He 177A-5s which participated got a loss rate well below 10%, making them the best bomber used in this campaign. The final end for the He 177 came in the 3rd quarter of 1944 whenhigh grade fuel wasn´t available in the numbers needed to operate a whole Geschwader.
