Why Alignment Is Important
Proper alignment helps ensure that your vehicle handles correctly, and can increase the life and performance of your tires.
When to Check Alignment
Wear on one edge indicates misalignment.
Daily impacts such as potholes and railroad crossings, as well as more severe events like accidents, can knock your vehicle out of alignment. Have the alignment checked if any of the following happen :
You've hit something
You see a wear pattern developing on the shoulders of the tires
You notice a difference in your vehicle's handing
How Wheels Are Aligned
Alignment involves adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they have the proper toe in and camber. The three main adjustments made in alignment are camber, caster, and toe.
Camber is the angle of the wheel when viewed from the front of the vehicle. If the wheel leans too far, uneven wear occurs.
Positive camber is when the top of the wheel is leaning away from the car. Too much positive camber wears tires on the outside.
Negative camber is when the top of the wheel is leaning in toward the car. Too much negative camber will wear tires on the inside.
The camber angle is designed and adjusted for each vehicle to keep the tires flat on the ground during a turn. If there is too much difference between the camber settings on the front wheels, the vehicle tends to pull sharply to one side.
Picture a caster wheel found on furniture or a shopping cart. When you push a shopping cart equipped with caster wheels, it tends to roll in a straight line because the wheels line up
On a vehicle, caster is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis, measured from the top of the tire, as viewed from the side. The axis is formed by extending an imaginary line through the upper and lower steering knuckles. The line extends through the upper and lower ball joints on vehicles with front control arms, and through the lower ball joint to the center of the strut mount on cars with struts.
Positive caster occurs when the angle is toward the rear of the vehicle. Positive caster makes your front wheels act as if your car was being pulled from the front so that they line up behind the point of pull, like a childï¿½s pull toy.
Negative caster occurs when the angle is to the front of the vehicle.
Caster is set so that your vehicle tends to go straight ahead. Caster affects your vehicleï¿½s low-speed steering and high-speed stability as well as how well your vehicle drives in a straight line (on-center feel). Negative caster will cause your car to "wander" and make it feel unstable at high speeds. Positive caster causes hard steering and can also result in excessive road shock and shimmy. Toe is the difference in the distance between the front of the tires and the back of the tires. Toe settings affect the handling characteristics of a vehicle while turning
Toe-in is when the front ends of the tires are closer. Toe-in introduces understeer going into a curve. If the tires are toed-in too much, the tread will be "worn" off, starting from the outside edges.
Toe-out is when the rear ends of the tires are closer. Toe-out can introduce oversteer in a curve and makes the vehicle feel like it is "diving" into the turn sharply. If tires are toed-out, the wear will start from the inside. This type of wear is called "feathering" and can be felt by running your hands across the tread of the tire.

Tyres are your only point of contact with the road surface. You cannot neglect the condition of your Tyres. If you do you could endanger not only yourself and your passengers, but also other road users. We recommend that you should check the condition of your Tyres regularly. We recommend you check your tyres at least once a month.
A Nationwide Survey (Tyre Industry Council, 2002) showed that almost 27% of vehicles had tyres with tread depths of less than 2mm. It is accepted that tyre performance and in particular braking in the wet, deteriorates dramatically below 2mm. Approximately 12% of vehicles actually had illegal tyres.
Why should you check your tyres?
Did you know that you are not insured when driving on illegal tyres? Worn tyres significantly impede the performance of your car. Do not forget that a worn tyre reduces the effectiveness of braking, steering, and acceleration, all of which are vital in staying safe. What are a few minutes put aside now to check your tyres, when you compare it to your own safety and that of your family’s?
What should you check?
The Tyre Industry Council have devised a five point tyre check:
Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls.
Check tyre tread depth.
Check all tyre pressures.
Check signs of irregular wear, i.e. alignment.
Check and examine the spare tyre.

A tyre can be under inflated without looking flat. To be safe you should check the pressures once a fortnight. To find out what pressure your tyres should be at please refer to your Vehicle Manual. Remember that tyre pressures should only be checked when your tyres are cold. A good guideline is to leave them for an hour to cool down before checking. You must not drive on under or over inflated tyres. This will impede your vehicles handling, in cases making the vehicle unstable. The wrong tyre pressure will increase tyre wear.
Is your tyre evenly worn across the surface? If not then it could be due to over or under inflation. (Please see Tyre Pressure Section above). If it is only worn on one edge it could be as a result of poor wheel alignment. If this is the case you need to have a professional garage check on your Tracking.
An unbalanced wheel does not just simply cause an annoying shake it can cause actual mechanical damage. We at hotline motorsports will balance your wheel as a matter of course after replacing a tyre.
The legal limit for car tread depth is 1.6mm (across 75% of the tyre). However the deeper the tread the more grip you have. We advise that you replace your tyres when the tread is less than 3mm. It is not safe to ignore the minimum tyre tread depth. It is illegal. For each illegal tyre you face a fine of up to £2,500, and may receive three penalty points.
Even if you never use your spare it is vital that you check it is in good condition. Check the pressure, and the tyre treads periodically. It is better to discover any problems in a safe and comfortable environment, i.e. at home, than by the roadside.

How many of us consider the condition of our car tyres before it comes time to renew the MOT test, we have a blow-out or the baldness becomes more apparent than the neighbour down the road with the bad comb-over?
Very few indeed apparently, as statistics provided by the Tyre Industry Council (TIC) – Britain’s foremost tyre safety organisation – demonstrate that approximately 70% of motorists are unaware of what constitutes illegal or unsafe tyres.
Now, before you think about turning the page, consider that poor tyre safety awareness and maintenance has led to over three thousand motor-related fatalities and up to 360,000 injuries per year throughout the UK. In these instances, faulty or improperly inflated tyres were identified as a contributing factor.
Though these statistics should be enough to deliver a solid reality check, the associated costs in terms of damaged property and associated rises in insurance premiums run into £billions.
Not surprisingly, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently issued a statement about the detrimental impact of faulty tyres on an insurer’s willingness to pay out at the time of accident.
And if nothing else motivates you to check your tyres before heading to your next stop today then read that last sentence again and then move on!
What the motor insurance companies are essentially saying is that if you have an accident and the condition of your tyres is suspect then beyond endangering the lives of everyone on the road you may be recklessly abandoning your future financial security.
The insurance community has seen fit to highlight unsafe tyres as a mitigating factor when apportioning blame at the time of vehicular accident as well as reserving the right to render a vehicle as uninsured. As a result, motorists may at the time of accident find themselves exposed to enormous personal financial loss in terms of any automobiles involved, personal injury suffered as well as for property reparation.
But even if you escape a fender bender or more serious encounter with another driver, the government has put in place potential fines of up to £2,500.00 per faulty tyre as well as applying three penalty points against the licenses of drivers found in breach of this law.

Return Postage paid by you. You will not be refunded postage to you, or a processing admin fee of 25%. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO ALLOY WHEELS FITTED WITH TYRES CAN BE CANCELLED OR RETURNED AFTER THE TYRES ARE FITTED.

The product is returned with a cover note outlining and explaining faults within the first year of purchase, after this time enquiries must be directed at the manufacturers which we will provide contacts for on request. Hotline Motorsports Ltd offer no guarantees other than those offered by the manufacturer.

All of our products are screened for any damage before they leave our depot. Each product is signed off by a member of staff to guarantee our quality control. If your product reaches you damaged do not accept the items.
All items when received from the delivery company must be checked before signing, if items are signed for in good condition without being checked you or we will not be able to claim any replacement funds from the delivery company. Please be aware that when items are collected from us by a delivery company they are checked and signed collected in good condition, therefore Hotline Motorsports Ltd offer no compensation of items damaged in transit. However Hotline Motorsports Ltd are willing to make a claim on your behalf provided you have checked the items and not signed for any items in good condition.
Collected items must be checked for damages before accepting. No damage claims can be accepted or considered when items leave our depot. This does not affect your statutory rights or your warranty.
Please note, Hotline Motorsports Ltd offer no guarantee on any finish including chrome, paint or lacquer and will refer to the manufacturer for finish warranty policy. Hotline Motorsports Ltd will not pay for, replace or subsidise in any way a wheel that is damaged due to manufacturer fault. If Hotline Motorsports Ltd can not help you with your warranty we will pass the details of the manufacturer or UK importer to you.
Faulty, ill fitting or unsuitable items will be replaced or exchanged where appropriate within a statutory six months period. If the correct items or suitable alternatives cannot be sourced within this period, you will be entitled to a full refund. This is in keeping with your statutory rights. Any disputes for items that are unfit for use including unsuitable and ilfitting items may need a third party opinion agreed by both disagreeing parties at the cost of you unless items are found to be faulty/ilfitting or unfit for use. Items may be returned to us at cost to you by you or your chosen courier. We must be expecting these items; items that are not agreed for return will not be accepted upon delivery. Items that are damaged by post or courier will not be accepted for return, if an item is damaged without prior notice before sending will not be accepted.
Any faulty item will be referred to the manufacturer before any replacement or refund is given. The manufacturer's decision is final and Hotline Motorsports Ltd will not supply a replacement or refund unless a manufacturer accepts liability.
It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that they have ordered the correct product(s), not the sales representative. Once a wheel order is placed, it is final and due to tyre fitting and supplier returns procedures no wheel/tyre orders can be cancelled. It is therefore advisable for the customer to be 100% sure of their situation before items are ordered.
Wheels ordered without tyres are non returnable once you fit tyres to them, please check that all products fit before making them un-returnable.
