We have sold 1000s of these excellent chucks.
I have used one of these chucks myself for many years on both my Harrison and Axminster lathes and found them to be well made, solid and reliable.
I have written below some information on chucks and Morse tapers that may be of interest. One of the things that confuse many people is the Morse taper, how it works or simply what size Morse taper they need for their own lathe. I have written below a few brief notes to try and help, but If have any questions then please ask.
What is a Morse taper?
Some people are unsure what size Morse taper fitting they need for their lathe or even what is a Morse taper. The Morse Taper is the "hollow tapered hole" in the centre of the Headstock and in the Tailstock of Lathes (as well as some Pillar drills and Milling machines) morse tapers are made to common diameter sizes with a universally recognised standard tapered profile. A Morse taper fitting is standard on just about every lathe made in the world since the 1950s.
Morse Tapers come in eight sizes. The taper size is normally identified by a single digit ranging from 0 to 7 (0 being the smallest) the words Morse Taper are commonly abbreviated to the letters MT, or MK in Europe (Morse Kone), a MT1 or a MK1 is a Morse Taper Number 1. MT2 or a MK2 being a Morse Taper Number 2.
It is fairly easy to identify which MT size you need as there is quite big difference in the hole diameter. Simply measuring the hole diameter in your tail stock. The approx Morse Taper hole sizes is written below, but if you are not sure then please send me a message.
MT1 = 12mmMT2 = 18mmMT3 = 24mm(MT1 & MT2 being the most popular).
Whilst there are other tapers, these are very rarely found on lathes. Of these "other tapers" the most common is a Jacobs taper which is normally only found on Pillar drills. The fitting (the hole) in the back of the chuck is called the "short taper" and these vary enormously. O
ur chucks have the common (and most popular) fitting called B16. The B16 is the Metric DIN taper number. The dimensions of the B16 "short taper" are 15.73mm taper to 14.50mm with a taper length of 24mm.
How does a Morse Taper work? Lathes, by their nature, operate in a rotary manner and normally a rotating workpiece comes into contact with a fixed tool, i.e. a drill bit held in a drill chuck held in the tailstock. The chuck must be held firmly in place, properly centred in line with the axis of rotation, but also able to be quickly and simply removed. The best way of achieving this was found to be using a tapered metal bar (similar to a ice cream cone with the top cut off) fitted into a hollowed tapered hole (or sleeve) in the head or tail stock. The large tapered surface area of the cone holds the shaft very securely in place through friction; hence the invention of the Morse Taper was born (invented 1864 by A. Morse). The Morse Taper is now universally accepted as the standard Machine Taper used throughout the world.

Planet - Rotur
Specialist Woodturning Products
Halved Solid Centre / Dead Centre
Size: Morse Taper 1 & 2 (MK1 & MK2)
Supplied in a handy storage tube that hangs up
We are Planet Rotur Authorised UK stockists, we sell their products simply because they make the best woodturning products in the world.
A halved solid centre is commonly used on metal turning lathes and is preferred by some woodturners because it gives more tail stock tool clearance than a live centre and also because a solid centre is more accurate than a live centre, as all live centres have a varying degree of run out. A good tip when using a solid centre is to put some wax polish on the point because it does not turn freely like a live centre.
At Endless Green we are Woodturners ourselves and are Planet Plus / Rotur, Main UK stockists.
We have a wide range of Penmaking and Woodturning items listed in our Ebay Shop that may be of interest.
We sell in our Ebay shop a wide range of products including:
Pack of 25 Sheets
of Glasspaper (sandpaper)
Full size sheets 230 x 280mm
This Glasspaper (sandpaper) is made by Flexovit and its very good quality as used by the trade. These are not packs of cheap pound shop sandpaper!
Preparation is key when trying to achieve a perfect finish. These hand sanding sheets are full size sheets and ideal for general purpose sanding applications. Suitable for sanding Wood and Paint
Each pack contains 25 sheets in a particular grade, but we do also have listed an assorted pack of 25 sheets.
The choice of abrasive grade is rather confusing and especially so when it comes to grades or the "grit" of Glasspaper (aka Sandpaper). The confusion is because Glasspaper grades for the past 200 years have been called 00, 0, 1, 1.5, F2 and M2 and to be honest, although I like tradition, the traditional grading system does not make much sense! and the reason why there is now a modern and simple grading classification system for abrasives using numbers, for example 40, 60, 80, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320, 400, 600 and 1200, the higher the number the finer the grade, but Glasspaper is still sold using the old grading system. As a rough guide (no pun intended!) I have written below a simple comparission scale as a guide difference between traditional and modern abrasive grades and also in the box underneath the common use of each grade, but if you are not sure just send us a message and we will try and help. Alan.
00 (also called Flour grade) = 180 grit = Fine
0 = 150 grit = Medium
1 = 120 grit = Medium
1.5 = 100 grit = Medium Coarse
F2 = 90 grit = Medium Course
M2 = 60 grit = Coarse
The Assorted pack contains 5 x Course 10 x medium and 10 x Fine
I have copied below for information, a guide to the common usage of abrasives, for example 40 grade is the roughest and 400 being finest.
400 Super Fine
320 Extra Fine
Fine sanding between coats
240 Very Fine
Sanding after priming, staining or sealing
Final surface smoothing or sanding between coats
150 Medium Fine

120 Medium Fine
