Selling here is a substantial 5 volume edition of the Works of Firmanus Lactanus, (aka St Chrysostom), published in Paris in 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada and a time of heightened religious conflict.
Joannes (John), called Chrysostomos, Archbishop of Constantinople A.D. 397-404. Chrysostom is well known within the Orthodox tradition as one of the most respected Biblical exegetes, theologians, public activists for justice in the classical world. Constantinople was one of the primary urban centers of Christianity in the Classical world, and Chrysostom was consecrated bishop of Constantinople in 397.
The copy offered for sale here contains his complete works in folio. It was printed by or on behalf of printer and bookseller Dennis Duval (1536-1619), and according to the colophon, the 'Printers' Society of Paris', their attractive sailing ship device with the name 'Lutetia' to the title pages. This is a scarce edition, with COPAC recording only 2 holdings in Oxford.
These volumes appear to have been stripped down for rebinding and then abandoned.

Condition: The volumes are disbound, without boards. The first and final gatherings are detached to vol 1, final gathering detached to vols 4 & 5, textblocks otherwise firm, contents largely in very good condition, a little toned and with just occasional minor spots or handling marks, title leaves with old ink stamp, code and earlier inscription at head, some creasing / tears to gutter on title of final volume, outer facing leaves with a few chips and creases from careless handling, otherwise a decent rebinding or reference set, FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE.
