SELECTION CHRONIQUE DE LA VIE ARTISTIQUE
INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY CHAGALL
This is a rarely found publication. It is unique in being signed by the artist Chagall, who is the subject of the monograph.
ANVERS EDITION 1929
TEXT IN FRENCH
10 1/4" x 7 1/2" 26 x 19 cm.
152 pages and 4 pages of ads
Softcover publication with usual age toning of cover and 64 pages of text. There are in-text drawings. some full page, and 87 pages of black and white reproductions of Chagall's paintings printed on glossy paper.
Photos 1 and 2 are truer to the actual tan color of the publication with its darkened spine and dark brown lettering than the very dark brown photos. The text is in black print. That said, I have used darker copies so you can better view the table of contents in photo 5 and the inscription at the top of foto 4.
This is volume 6 of the Series Selection Chronique de la vie Artistique.
The back cover is in very good condition. The spine is darkened and minimally attached/separated from the front cover as in Photo 2. The front cover shows creasing/tear across the lower right corner and creasing at the top corner. There are 2 small tears along the edge of the front cover.
Internally the text, drawings and photos are unmarked and the pages are secure.
What makes this book unique and highly collectible is its inscription.
A Monsieur Barth
This is a rare inscription, signed by Chagall in ink on the title page of this book. If you require a better view of the inscription please contact me. The formality of the inscription, reflects the high social station of Monsieur Barth. possibly the renowned Swiss clergyman Karl Barth, with whom Chagall was acquainted in the period between the two world wars.
