Country of Origin:

For auction a delightful antique Clichy nosegay miniature paperweight with five ruffled bright green leaves embracing a posy of three millefiori flowers.

The millefiori flowers are an exquisite brightly coloured combination, with one each of amethyst, ruby and turquoise.  Under magnification it is possible to see the  intricacy of each of the flowers - the turquoise has a flower shaped centre in white with tiny dots around the white, the amethyst has a centre comprising a yellow whorl cane surround by yellow tubes filled with white and the ruby has a centre of a cluster of white canes.  The shape of the weight is neat, smooth and symmetrical and it measures  1 3/4" diameter by 1 3/8" high.  The weight views very well although there are  surface scratches on  the dome, some tiny and some long, which do go across the dome and should be visible in the pictures.  There is what looks to be a tiny faint graze above the amethyst flower, measuring about 2mm x 1mm and it is difficult to tell (or photograph) but  I think this is a small bruise - the mark should be visible in photo 1 on the clear glass above the amethyst millefiori. So this weight is not in 'as new perfect condition', but is I believe, a weight in a good and untouched state and it's original size. The base has very little wear, is highly polished and slightly concave with a small ground rim for the weight to rest on.  There are no chips or cracks. The nosegay is laid out neatly in the weight and in my opinion the actual design of it is visually perfect, with the matching size millefiori symmetrically placed at the heart of the surrounding leaves. On page 364 of  La Cristallerie de Clichy: Une prestigieuse manufacture du XIXe siècle By Roland Dufrenne, Jean Maës, Christian Capdet, Bernard Maës there are a few examples of these nosegay paperweight but none of them contain the turquouise millefiori and I haven't been able to find another that does, so I think the colour combination is possibly unusual.  If you require any further photographs or information please do contact me. Thank you for looking at my auction and good luck if you bid.

Thank you to the members of the Glass Message Board for the extra information and confirmation of the id for this weight.
