12mo.  249 pages.  Binding measures about 6 5/8 inches tall by 4 /14 inches wide.  Bound in original full brown calf with a ribbed spine and a black label and gilt tooling on the spine.  The binding shows wear, and the front hinge is starting to crack.  The endpapers and text are toned.  A sound copy.

Anne Claude de Caylus (1692-1765) was a French antiquarian and man of letters who had an interest in archaeology an design.  He was in the French army early in life and then went travelling in the Levant, Greece, Italy, Germany, and England.  He was a collector of antiquities and a student of design and writings of the Near East, especially in Egypt.  There was an earlier edition of this work which had engravings.  This edition was apparently issued without any illustrations.  This work does have a number of decorative headpieces and tail pieces. This is Volume 2 only, of a two volume set.  Still, it has a number of interesting tales set in the area of Iraq and possibly other near eastern regions.
