This is a wonderful antique figural candlestick by Mappin Brothers of Sheffield, England, circa 1865-1890, depicting two goats circling a tall grapevine.
Base metal is likely iron or white metal and it originally had a gold gilt finish. I purchased it here in a barn in NC and the finish was completely worn. I decided to redo it by painting it with lifelike colors and then gilding it instead of just spray painting it with gold. It turned out very nice and it gave it a wonderful shabby cottage look.
When I purchased it, these large handcut crystals were in the box with the candlestick so I have just hung them from the grape vine branches.
