1820 Old HOLY BIBLE THOMAS HOPKINS SMALLEY ST. GEORGE MAINE  Family GENEALOGY

 photo 106c39a3-165a-414f-88a8-96c645c20d3a.jpg

CONDITION:  Circa 200 years old with one significant flaw.  The title page is missing and the book begins after the front flyleaf with the first page of Genesis as pictured above and below.  No date but research shows the Massachusetts Bible Society was founded in  1809.  It appears this book belonged to Thomas H. Smalley born in 1802, as he signed his name and the words "His Book" twice on the front free endpaper. (St. George is also found written twice on the front free endpaper).  His death recorded on the front flyleaf and on the rear flyleaf (along with his brother Addam) is in a different hand, as is the last 4 births recorded on the first rear flyleaf. (All pictured below).  He passed away in 1826.  Somewhere in between 1802 - 1826 he was given this book - hence the circa 1820 date.

Front free endpaper almost loose and endpapers are chipped and torn as pictured. The main text block appears complete.  All pages are tightly bound and boards are securely attached, some page tips turned over and slips of paper inserted to mark certain pages. Pencil scribbles on front and rear endpapers. Moderate foxing throughout.

Full leather with four raised bands on spine and original spine label intact.  Leather chipped off at bottom of spine and inner bottom corner of front board as pictured.  Other wear to boards as pictured. "Massachusetts Bible Society" stamped seal on front board The Bible measures 7  1/4"  x  4  1/2" and is 3" thick.

(Many photos below the genealogy data).

The second son, Levi Smalley, was a lighthouse keeper on Tenant's Harbor, ME.

    http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=530
Levi Smalley of St. George was the first keeper to live in the little red house (with his wife Lucy and daughter Sarah) and care for the light in the white tower with its red lantern and ventilator ball. Smalley was followed in 1867 by a blacksmith from St. George named John A. Farnham.

The Massachusetts Bible Society is a Christian, ecumenical organization founded on July 6, 1809 at a ceremony in the Representatives Chamber of the Massachusetts State House. It was formally incorporated on February 10, 1810 and is the third oldest Bible Society in the United States, following the Philadelphia society, founded December 12, 1808 (now known as the Pennsylvania Bible Society),[1] and the Connecticut society, founded in the Spring of 1809.[2] The offices of the society are located in Newton Centre, Massachusetts on the campus of Andover Newton Theological School.
