Miniature set of Shakespeare Plays

By William Shakespeare

1823-1825 - London - W. Pickering

5.5" by 2" , 48; 4-64; 4-70; 74-145; 164-224; 242-321; 254-326pp.

A scarce and charming pocket-sized set of theatrical works from William Shakespeare.

The collection includes; King Henry IV, Part I.

Pericles, Prince of Tyre.

Comedy of Errors.

As You Like It.

Timon of Athens.

All's Well That Ends Well.

King Henry VI, Part II.

All volumes are adorned with decorative head and tail pieces throughout, as well as a beautifully and intricately engraved frontispiece, engraved by T.Stothard.

William Pickering was an English publisher, notable for introducing cloth binding to British publishing before 1820.Pickering began working as an antiquarian bookseller before 1820, and quickly moved into publishing. In 1819 he began his series of Diamond Classics ? small books set in tiny type, that were offered in a uniform binding of cloth or leather at a price the common man could afford. These are usually recognised as the first publishers' bindings in cloth ? an innovation which had a rapid and profound impact on the publishing industry. Not just a publisher of reprints, much original work was also published by Pickering: from 1828 he became the Samuel Taylor Coleridge's publisher, as well as bringing out the first edition in ordinary typography of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience. He specialised in scholarly editions of classic authors, both of ancient and English literature, including important editions of Blake, Malthus, Boswell, Johnson, Marlowe, Shakespeare and Isaac Walton.

All volumes are bound in their original Pickering publisher's moire cloth.

Bound in their original Pickering publisher's moire cloth. Externally, all volumes are a little rubbed, with wear to the extremities. Loss and lifting to each volume's backstrip. Light damp staining to All's Well That Ends Well and As You Like It. All front hinges are strained, aside from As You Like It and Comedy of Errors, which are holding firm. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound and intermittently bright. Some very light foxing to the endpapers, and the odd spot scattered throughout. Overall: GOOD.
