DETAILS

A first edition of this work by Charles Dickens, containing short stories and two novels.

Complete in three volumes and bound from the parts.

Illustrated throughout by George Cattermole and Hablot (Phiz) Brown.

Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from April 4, 1840?December 4, 1841. It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends (which includes Mr. Pickwick), and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories were included, followed by the novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. It is generally thought that Dickens originally intended The Old Curiosity Shop as a short story like the others that had appeared in Master Humphrey's Clock, but after a few chapters decided to extend it into a novel.

With a frontispiece and preface to volumes I and II only. The prefaces are dated 1840 and 1841 respectively.

With a bookplate to each front pastedown of Mount St. Joseph, Boulton.

CONDITION

In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, rather worn with straining to both boards of volume I and lifting to the backstrip. Joints of volume III have slight cracking. Slight loss to paper of one front board. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front free endpaper of volume I missing. Generally bright with occasional spots and handling marks, and the odd pencil mark.

Overall: GOOD ONLY
