Charles John Huffam Dickens, 1812 ?1870, was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit is considered the last of Dickens? picaresque novels. It was originally serialized between 1843 ? 1844. Dickens himself proclaimed Martin Chuzzlewit to be his best work.  Like nearly all of Dickens' novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly instalments. The main theme of the novel, according to a Preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit.

The binding is generally tight and firm. The front board is held by one cord only. The rear hinge has failed, with the leather of the spine come away. Pages 623-624, and one plate, are detached with the rear hinge. Page 621-622 is partially detached with a small closed tear. The frontispiece is detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally bright, with scattered spotting. Pages 613-624 have marginal ink marks. Overall the condition is fair.
