~ 1846 Pattern 16th (The Queen’s) Lancers Officers Czapka Helmet ~

This is the first pattern of this type of helmet, the 1846 model and would date from 1846 to 1855 approximately. The battle honours include; Fuentes d'Onor (for 1811), Vittoria (for 1813), Nive (for 1813), Salamanca (for 1812), Talavera (for 1809), Aliwal (for 1846), Peninsula (for 1807-14), Sobraon (for 1846), Afghanistan (for 1839), Bhurtpore (for 1822), Waterloo (for 1805), Ghuznee (for 1839) and Maharajpore (for 18 43) but do not include those related to the 2nd Boer War.

The plate consists of a gilt brass fluted plate, over this are the silver (now tarnished) 16th Lancers battle honors under the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom.

The skull and front peaks are of black leather embellished with gold lace, the waist is encircled by a broad band of gold lace with a central scarlet train.

The very dark blue cloth over cane trencher top has steel reinforcements. It is quartered by gold round cord.

The plume boss bears the royal cypher VR (Victoria Rex) in gold wire embroidery on a crimson velvet ground. The plume is of long white feathers, probably goose.

The czapka has lion head bosses to hold in place the gilt brass, leather and velvet backed chinscales. This particularly helmet has not fitted with a side hook to hold the extended chain.

The lining consists of a black leather band with a red silk lining.

Please note czapka is also spelt schapka and chapka.

A similar helmet to the 12th Lancers sold at Thomas De La Mar for £9,300 (including commission), I do not know the condition of that one but it did lack both its plume and liner.

~ Dimensions ~

The helmet alone is 10 inches tall with the top flat being 9 inches by 9 inches.
With the plume it stands at 20 inches tall.
The helmet weighs 1.13 kg.

~ Condition ~

The gilding is generally good, the silver scrolls of the plate have blackened. There is no evidence of rebadging.
The gold fabric is oxidised or stained in places. Several of the feathers in the plume are lightly stained.
The gold cord edging has worn away to the right as viewed from the front. It is also worn to a much lesser degree on the other three corners.
Some of the black fabric has worn where the cord has frayed, revealing the cane frame, and also on the plume boss panel facing.
The interior metal frame has lightly rusted. The lining is musty but generally complete.
The gilt on the plume boss is very bright to the sides though the front is less so and the backing velvet has mottled slightly with age. I suspect it has been partially cleaned recently.
The helmet retains a good shape.

~ 16th Lancers ~

The 16th The Queen's Lancers was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first raised in 1759. It saw service for two centuries, before being amalgamated into the 16th/5th Lancers in 1922.

The 16th Lancers were the first British regiment to use lances on the battlefield as lancers at the Siege of Bhurtpore. The regiments nickname was The Scarlet Lancers.
