12mo.  129, 162 pages.  The binding measures just over 7 inches tall by about 4 3/4 inches wide.  Bound in half burgundy morocco with burgundy cloth-covered boards.  This is not a signed binding, but the paperwork in the book suggests that this is a Bayntun binding.  The binding shows some light rubbing and wear and a couple of light scuff marks near the foot of the spine.  Overall a nice, attractive copy.

There are a couple of pieces of ephemera laid in loosely.  One is a clipping from a catalogue, noting item #384 of this copy or another copy like this in 3 volumes (we have only one volume).  The copy on the listing is for a set in "New half brown morocco extra, gilt backs with raised bands, top edges gilt, by Bayntun, Very Fine Copy."  A handwritten note on that listing is dated 1932.

There is also a receipt for this book from B. H. Blackwell Ltd. in Oxford and dated ME.5.6.44.  However that receipt gives the date for the book as 1866 (typo?).  The receipt is for a buyer in Connecticut.  We bought the book, along with many others, from that buyer's grandchildren.  One interesting aspect of this receipt is that there is a line for "War Risk Insurance."  The buyer acquired this in 1944 during World War Two, and the receipt has been in the book ever since!

A nice copy of a scarce book.  Don't let this one slip away.  Keep an eye out for our other auctions.  We've recently acquired a large number of older books like this and will be getting some up each week.
