COMMON SENSE IN THE HOUSEHOLD

Original 1888 Edition of " Common sense in the household : a manual of practical housewifery " by Marion Harland ::  Published by New York : C. Scribner's ::  Oilcloth Hardcover ::  Complete with 546 pgs ::  Measures 7.5” x 5".

GOOD CONDITION :  Tightly bound with strong hinges.  Light cracking of the front hinge.  Missing one rear blank endpaper, otherwise all pages present and firmly intact.  Pages clean and bright. At rear of book is a page or two of neatly handwritten recipes.  Oil cloth covers exhibit some shelf wear and light wear as shown in pics.  Overall a nice condition example of this antique cookery and household management book.

Marion Harland’s Common Sense in the Household is an antique cookery book full of delightful culinary treasures from the Victorian era.  Many are mouthwatering recipes you might wish to try in your own kitchen such as Huckleberry Cake or Cream Raspberry Tart, while others, such as roasted pig’s head or ragout of squirrel, may have you running for the hills!

Between these covers you’ll find recipes for: meats, poultry, game, vegetables, gingerbread, ices, breads, brandied fruits, butter, cakes, canning, preserves, custards, eggs, fish, ice cream, jellies, sauces, pickling, pies, pastry and much more.  There are also sections on:  servants, the Sick-Room, soap and sundries.

And of course what decent antique cookbook would be complete without beer and wine recipes!  Plenty of those as well.

This is an interesting antique cookery book that offers much practical advice and many tips, such as black cake or wedding cake if kept in a cool, dry place will not spoil in two months.  Not sure I’d want to try that, but interesting nonetheless.  Also, according to Ms. Harland, never offer an apology for an imperfect meal; “ Many a partial failure would pass unobserved were it not for the clouded brow and ernest apologies of the hostess. Do not apologize except for the last gasp!”

Please see the generous sampling of pictures below taken from this delightful antique cookery book.  Also, a complete index of recipes is pictured below.  Low starting bid and no reserve.  Bid now and you could own this piece of culinary history for your very own kitchen!
