PANORAMA OF NATIONS

Original 1888 First Edition of “Panorama of Nations; or Journeys Among the Families of Men: A Description of their Homes, Customs, Habits, Employments and Beliefs; Their Cities, Temples, Monuments, Literature, and Fine Arts” by H.G. Cutler & L.W. Yaggy :: Published by G.S. Cline: Des Moines :: Measures 9 x 12" :: Complete with All Pages. :: DeLuxe Edition Bound in Full Leather.

VERY GOOD CONDITION: A tightly bound volume, solid hinges, clean pages, cover wear as shown, complete with all pages; overall an excellent copy.

Here is the beautifully illustrated first edition work housed in DeLuxe full leather binding titled “Panorama of Nations.” The author’s of this work traveled across the world to show a picture of life from the human standpoint to seize upon the salient points of a people's character, as evinced by their dress, home life, religion, superstitions and government, and whether savage or civilized, present them so that the good and bad will both appear.

They began traveling to the tribes of Africa, careful to show how the geographical division, the country or the state, is founded upon the race or tribe, and that the fortunes of war and the advance or retreat of the world's families, are all that determine political boundaries. From Africa they went to the islands of the Indian and Pacific oceans, sailing from the Malay peninsula to Madagascar, and taking peeps into Borneo, Sumatra, Java; have visited the cannibals of the Feejee Islands, the Sandwich Islanders, the Papuans of New Guinea, the Australians and many other tribes of less importance.

From here the authors journeyed to Asia among the Tartars, following the streams of Tartar and Mongol blood to the Arctic Ocean, in Europe, and the Arctic Ocean in Asia, across Behring Strait and the North American continent into Greenland. The countless tribes of the Russian Empire, and the Esquimaux of both hemispheres are given. Next, during the same mighty journey, the Indians of the Americas are written about.

The authors then returned to Asia again, profiling the ancient Hindus, the Indo-Chinese and the Japanese, and "shaking up the Asiatic civilization generally." Finally, their fifth journey spanned from Turkey in Asia and all over Europe and across the ocean to the United States.

Throughout, the book is illustrated with numerous, various-sized, in-text wood-engraved illustrations, 16 photo-engravings, or similar type of black & white, illustrated plates; four with artwork by Doepler + Moss, & 12 full-page chromolithographic plates of facial profiles, scenes, etc. From Egyptian Temples, Killing Witches, Cannibals, the “Negroes” of Africa, Native Idols, Weird Superstitions, Occult Rituals, American Indian Wars, and much more, Panorama of Nations is an amazing worldwide look at people of the 19th Century.
