“The medal illustrated in my images is the actual item for sale in this listing. I have taken the best photographs I can in natural light, where possible, in order to ensure any defects are shown. Bear in mind however, that the image detail is reduced by the Ebay uploading process. This medal is in superb collectable condition for its age but obviously, prospective purchasers should bear in mind that it has been in limited circulation and its condition reflects this as shown.”
1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Bronze Four Generations Medal
Here I am offering a superb example of this historic commemorative medal issued for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
These were actually struck in 1895 then issued officially in 1897 for the Queen's historic
60th anniversary of her accession to the throne. The design was also used for commercial advertising purposes, most notably for Remington Typewriters.
The obverse design was by H.
GRUEBER (signed lower left rim). It shows the conjugated heads of Queen
Victoria, The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), Prince George (later
King George V) and Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII) all facing left.
Above is a crown and below, two sprays of leaves tied with ribbon and the date,
The legend reads on the obverse FOUR GENERATIONS OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. Around the edge
at 8 o'clock it reads 10 SEP 95 H.GREUBER & CO. 1897 37 SNOWHILL LONDON
The reverse has a centre line of three shields: Ireland, England, and
Scotland. The rather androgynous angel embellishment on the Irish harp is particularly well-endowed on these, I always think; maybe the engraver was having a little poke at Victorian prudery! There is a crown above and flowers below the shields. The legend reads THE
DIAMOND JUBILEE above a crown. The legend around the rim reads TO COMMEMORATE THE
60TH YEAR OF HER MAJESTY'S REIGN 1837-97. It is medal orientated with a reeded
All in all a really rather unusual medal with a very finely struck design and
font. The portraits are striking in quality. Overall this example is in superb collectable condition with traces of lustre remaining.
The diameter is 32.2mm
and it weighs 11.45g. It is a most attractive chocolate brown colour over much of the surfaces with rather an attractive halo of lustre around the portraits.
This will be a low start no reserve auction as usual.
