C.1900 PHOTOGRAPHIC GLASS BOER WAR COMMONWEALTH LIGHT HORSE SHIP PORT RIVER ADELAIDE SA GOING TO SOUTH AFRICA N63.
We have on offer an original superb detailed topographical glass Magic Lantern slide of a troop ship (Number 92) leaving for the Boer War in South Africa carrying our 1st. Contingent of Commonwealth Light Horse from the Port River., Adelaide, South Australia, c.1900 by J.Gazzard ( SA photographer).
This is a very clear & sharp, detailed with no major scratches or any damage and looks fabulous when enlarged. The 4 protective affixed black paper edge borders are still in tact.
Such images look great when scanned & enlarged into a positive image on photographic paper on a flat bed scanner. I have seen these images framed into period frames & they look absolutely magnificent .... there are many sellers on eBay & the internet who have quite good businesses selling these scanned images.
These magic lantern glass plate images were the basis of a whole entertainment industry between the 1860's to the 1920's. Halls, institutes, theatres & places of public gatherings were used to show these images, basically to audiences who craved for stories / fables/nursery rhymes, scenes of world places, humourous & risque, scientific advancements, & world news etc. Often these travelling magic lantern shows would involve music ( perhaps a piano & in some cases up to a whole orchestra), scripted programmes with an MC, dancers & entertainers & sometimes quite elaborate sets.
