Grading Of Books

I mainly sell vintage or antique books so naturally these tend to have greater wear and tear than modern or new books. For me, personal inscriptions, annotations and general wear are part of the appeal of old books as they can add poignancy and a wonderful sense of history. I consider them a positive aspect to an item. I am not an expert but I try to provide an honest guide to the condition of the books I sell. If you require a more specific condition report please contact me before bidding.

I grade my books as follows:

New
A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

Excellent
A book that has been read, but looks new. The book cover has no visible wear. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. No wear and tear.

Very Good
A book that has been read but has minimal wear and tear. No obvious damage to the book cover, no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Maybe some identifying marks on the inside cover, but this is minimal.

Good
A book that has general wear and tear. The majority of pages are undamaged but there may be some foxing, creasing or tearing, and inscriptions or underlining of text, but this is minimal. There may be some damage to the book cover, binding and pages but not to the detriment of the item. A few pages may be loose but there are no known missing pages.

Acceptable
A book that has considerable wear and tear. Pages may be damaged and there may be some foxing, creasing or tearing, and inscriptions or underlining of text. There may be damage to the book cover, binding and pages but not to the overall detriment of the item. Pages may be loose and there may be missing pages.

Poor
A book that is in a bad way or extremely delicate. There may be considerable damage, missing pages and a high level of foxing, creasing or tearing of pages. The general state of the book might be very fragile.
